Change of ticket Excess

I've just excessed the outward portion of a super off peak return (full railcarded price £12.55) to an off peak return (full railcarded price £16.50)
I was charged £3.95...is this right?
I thought it would be half the difference as I was only excessive one portion.

The excess was issued correctly.

You pay the full difference between the two ticket types.

The exception is where an excess is done for class of travel (ie STD -> 1ST) or change of ticket route (eg NOT VIA LONDON -> +VIA LONDON).

No, this is the correct excess. However you should have had both portions excesses at the same time for this of course.

Excessing only half of the ticket isn't technically correct as you're excessing the ticket as a whole I.e. a return. Some staff do only charge half if you ask for an excess of only one portion but the correct procedure is to excess all of it.

If they allowed that, loads of people would be able to get away with paying less than the train companies intended, as many off peak fares only have a morning restriction.

Perhaps one day all this will be swept away with single leg pricing, but there are a lot of obstacles to overcome first (there are threads for that if you want to read more).

Ah okay, I see. That makes sense - it did occur to me that paying different rates for the legs would be a little ludicrous (though I thought it could just another one of those many bizarre little tricks one can use to save on tickets). If it happens again, I'll remember to ask for both to be excessed!

Is the other half now excessible for free, given that I have paid the full railcarded off peak return fare?

The other half has already been excessed - as the excess to Off Peak applies to both directions - but you were incorrectly handed one coupon instead of two. Retain it.
