All,

I was travelling back from London Victoria to Brighton on Sunday with my partner and a friend of ours. They had purchased online London Terminals to Brighton Super off-peak singles Route FCC Only, obviously not valid from Victoria.

I suggested asking at the ticket office for a change of route excess, which the ticket clerk was unable or unwilling to do. Should this be possible?

Thanks,
Leigh

No. Operator-specific tickets cannot be excessed in this way. Even if excessed to the Any Permitted fare, it would still only be valid on FCC.

(Let's not reopen the debate regarding Condition 10, if anyone is tempted.)

bb21 is correct. This is not a route restriction, its an operator restriction, that for legacy IT reasons is put in the route restriction field on the ticket.

I would have purchased new tickets to East Croydon, and changed trains there for an FCC service using your original tickets.

Indeed; despite being printed next to "Route:" the operator restriction is not a routeing.

My advice would be: 1) stop buying walk-up tickets online in advance! and 2) use Oyster to East Croydon and change there, you'll not have a long wait (or go to London Bridge of course).

Thanks for clearing that up, guys! Interestingly, we were told that the reason they couldn't do the excess was because the tickets were purchased online, not because it was operator-specific.

And, yes, partner has been told not to book tickets online unsupervised again. ;)
