If you have an Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) for a particular route, and want a change of route excess in order to return by a different route for which there is no CDR and for which the cheapest walk-up fare is a Super Off-Peak (SSR), can you do that as a simple change of route excess as described in section 4.2.1 at http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70374, or does the fact that you're changing ticket type as well cause complications? (I see from section 4.2.4. that a change to a less restrictive ticket type involves payment of the full difference even if you only require the change in one direction).

If you can do it as a simple change of route, paying half the difference, are booking clerks or guards likely to know this?

The change of ticket type is purely due to the lack of a CDR on the more expensive route, not anything to do with time or break of journey restrictions -- neither the CDR nor the SSR have any relevant evening restrictions, and all travel in both directions will still be on one day.

In theory yes. If the booking clerk can't/won't issue it, I'd get on board. There is no penalty for a change of route excess on board (though at some stations you may be prevented from boarding by a gateline).

You may need to "shop around", as some clerks will insist on it being the full difference due to the change of ticket type, even though it's not your fault there's no CDR.
