Hi there

Looking for a career change and a train driver seems like a good career?

Living in the South of Glasgow there's only one company that has depots around here which is Scotrail? Think Virgin have their depots in Edinburgh which would mean moving if they recruited? I know Scotrail recruited last year for trainee drivers but found out too late. They had something like 30,000 applicants for 100 jobs so competition is obviously tough for these jobs.

Anyone know roughly when they might employ again?

Also what do people think of the career?

Thanks any advice would be appreciated

Don't let statistics like this discourage you from applying. A well-researched and executed application form submission will immediately set you apart from the competition.

If the OP is willing to relocate there are some companies which allow this, so long as you can demonstrate that you've researched the practicalities of it.

Abellio Greater Anglia have allowed relocatees (dunno about the new franchise), as do SWT I think, London Midland did but that may have changed. There's probably others, best bet is to check the job spec and if it's unclear, ask.

Nontheless, whilst the odds for Scotrail were pretty long, that's the norm across the industry.

Thanks for the reply

Since your working for the company you'll know best. How long you thinking 5+ years or within the next year or so? As I said they looked like they took on a lot last year so doubted they would do any this year.

Another thing is, im actually studying mechanical engineering, finding it really really tough so thats why im looking at other careers just in case. Do the depots offer any summer internships for students? If so who can i contact?

Interested to know if you ever drive the Busby line? that my local one.

Thanks Fraser
