Central trains livery

I was just looking back at some photos and saw one of my favourite dmu's class 170
and it may seem a little weird but it really think it looks good in the non existent central trains livery (later one 2005)

does anyone else think that ?

Can't stand the livery recalls memories of overcrowded 158s on the Cambrian in 2002... boiling hot in the summer... The set was a 4 car by error therefore the rear two were locked out of use externally but not internally... the air con in the rear two was notably better and we managed to gain the guards approval to sit in there

It was run by wales and borders then but the parent company and livery were the same!

Actually quite liked the CT livery. It made a bright and refreshing change from the plain Regional Railways livery it replaced (mind you that was bright and refreshing on introduction).

Didn't Central Trains for a while have several different liveries. I know there was Centro Livery on the Class 150s and 323s and the Class 170s had the bright green and blue livery which was later replaced by the darker one. Back in 1999 when I was a child I remember watching the trains from my garden and giving them nicknames, the 153s and 156s in Regional Railways livery were "old ones", the 158s in Central Livery were "an old one made into a new one" and the 170s were "new ones".

Does anyone remember when East Midlands Trains took over in 2007 some of their 158s had Northern Spirit Livery with the Central Trains ))) at the end of the coach and East Midlands Trains Branding, that was a strange combination.

In opinion it was much better having a single Midlands franchise rather than an east and west one like today but that's another story.

Didn't Central Trains for a while have several different liveries. Back in 1999 when I was a child I remember watching the trains from my garden and giving them nicknames, the 153s and 156s in Regional Railways livery were "old ones", the 158s in Central Livery were "an old one made into a new one" and the 170s were "new ones".

It wasn't replaced with the dark green livery, that was when MML recieved the 222s and the 170s were sent to CT. They were never repainted into the full green and blue and so just went around in the MML base coat and had ((( Central Trains ))) vinyls put on top. Towards the end of the franchise you could see the orange MML stripes reappearing

Don't forget the FTPE navy stripe across the bottom 1/3 of the coaches from when they took over the 158s. They truly were a mess at that point.

Don't forget though that transfers of units bought about unusual livery combinations, or a lack in changing colours to the respective operating company. (See attachment)

I'm pretty sure that around the time of the end of Central trains, nationwide, there were more 158s in 'incorrect' liveries than in the full ones of their TOC!

Some of the Class 158s at East Midlands Trains have gone from Northern Spirit to Arriva Trains Northern to First TransPennie Express to Central Trains to East Midlands Trains but still had the Northern Spirit N after all those moves.

I remember when Central Trains first got those units in 2006, seeing 158 with First Transpennie Express Branding I was confused and thought that First Transpennie Express had taken over.

Wessex Trains did have a batch of ex Central Trains 158s, the two former SWT pairing where ex Central Trains too.

Ahhhhh this whole thread brings back pleasant memories. Well, mostly

We had ex-CT 158s on the Marches for what felt like forever, some of those have now gone to Northern. And the ex-TPX 158s on the New Street to Hereford route were definitely a weird sight when they first came about in my neck of the woods. Still a welcome change though admittedly!

As for the ex-MML 170s, they were very much welcome! The former First Class seats in the middle coaches were most appreciated, always was a rush to get one of those!

Feels like an eternity since CT was about, that livery was certainly different to the Regional Railways livery I saw a fair bit of at the time.

This thread has really got me nostalgic for the earlier years of the hobby... *goes off to enjoy the memories*

I remember when a central liveried example appeared on a wessex trains portsmouth train with an arriva uniformed guard... Weird

The difference I always notice between the ex-MML Cl.170s and those built for Central Trains is the window surrounds. The CT ones have a square edge to them which digs into your arm whereas the ex-MML ones have a rounded edge which doesn't!

As for the ex-MML 170s, they were very much welcome! The former First Class seats in the middle coaches were most appreciated, always was a rush to get one of those!

In my experience on the Nottingham-Cardiff runs, most people didn't seem to know it was declassified, and it wasn't rare for me to get the entire compartment to myself between Cardiff and Brum.

North of there, it was usually fairly well filled (if not full) - whether it was people in the know or just commuters chancing it instead of standing in the vestibules I don't have a clue

A livery I liked, I always considered the CT livery 170s, to be much nicer than the MML livery 170s. They always used a older, nosier DMU with 3+2 seating (which I now know to be a 150) on a evening service between Birmingham and Leicester, which I remember catching a few times in 2004-6ish. I can also remember a 153 on the first off-peak Leicester to Birmingham once when I was about 6, that was most definitely an 'interesting' experience and started my hatred of said class.
