Hi all.

I'm curious but is there CCTV on board all trains local and intercity...?

If so, what's the sole function for it? Maybe many functions.
Is it stop trouble, look for over crowded carriages, fare dodgers etc?

Who has access to the live footage, is it a central location or the driver?

I doubt there is any stock out there (heritage stock excepted) that won’t have CCTV fitted.
I think the catch all phrase that is commonly used is “for safety & security” which covers a whole range of functions!

i don’t think the feed can be viewed live from external but can be viewed by the driver dependant on the stock.

I believe they can on Merseyrails new class 777s, whether it is or not yet I'm not sure.

CCTV is a broad term in itself. There are many different CCTV systems with different functions. Train door cameras for DOO, forward/rear facing "dashcams" for accident investigations/(sometimes) track/line side monitoring, OHLE cameras to monitor pantographs, internal cameras to both deter and investigate instances of criminality... how specific do you want to go?
Ultimately though, a camera is a camera, and any footage recorded can and would be used for whatever purpose is required at the time.

All trains? No. There are trains out there which do not have CCTV fitted - some fleets which will surprise you.

Many functions. All of the above, and more. If we look at Greater Anglia’s Stadler fleet, you can see monitors in the cabs showing the saloons. I should expect they can be monitored remotely too (although can’t cite that).

I’d probably say most but not all rolling stock has CCTV on it. More likely to be older trains without CCTV, but this isn’t universal.

I am pretty sure that if CCTV is at a location that legally there needs to be a sign declaring it including who controls the information. Normally it is “for safety and security” and can be used for evidence. So it is used in the same way as in the rest of the country; as a deterrence and also help prevent / as evidence of crime / logging and reporting. Quite wide-ranging reasons really.

This will vary a lot depending on each company’s policies and technological limitations of the system/fleet. It may be just the guard (or the driver on a DOO service). Often a TOC control may have access but it may be restricted for understandable (GDPR) reasons. The BTP are often able to access certain live CCTV, however this may be by physically turning up to the control desk with access.

CCTV tends to be stored for 28 days as a default.

Northern's legacy fleet has been lacking in this respect, often dummy cameras if anything. Not sure if they've sorted them out now. Elsewhere, older units often have the CCTV connected to an onboard hard drive which needs to visit a depot to be downloaded, newer units can be viewed live by Control.

Depends. Is there a particular route/train type/TOC you have in mind?

Loads of uses, like CCTV anywhere, all the usual ones like evidence in disputes and crimes, but for some companies it also informs the information they put out live about seat occupancy.

It's on all new trains as I understand. i don't want to sound like big brother, but I'd assume anything you do on a train is being filmed.

Live CCTV is available to guards at all times and drivers when stationary (except for pass-com activations) on the Stadler 745/755 fleet.
