Revenue Inspectors now stand daily on the western (new platform 7) and Brunel (1989 building) gatelines and stop people randomly as trains come in.But even if the OP was seen coming off a fast train from Paddington on platform 7, why was he stopped? Lots of people would do exactly the same thing and just go through the ticket gates. Perhaps those are set to reject any tickets from Twyford?
Perhaps he fell into the "Leeds trap" with an RPI as he approached the unpaid fares window at the other gates that face onto platform 7.
This gentleman probably bought from Twyford, which is extremely common and it is like fish throwing themselves into the net. They all eventually get caught.
It depends on the Inspector as to whether he will pursue this as a multiple journey fraud case and a lot of that is to do with an attitude check. Hostile people almost certainly will have a Trainline request for full history, polite people probably not.
It also depends whether the Inspector is actually one of the new Revenue Investigators, who are looking for these type of cases and are upskilled. GWR took 10 on in the last six months.
GWR prosecutions are based at Reading, so this is a particularly dumb station to evade to/from
