Hi All

I'm a bit paranoid, today I traveled with a zone 2-3 card in a zone 1 area. The ticket man caught me out and gave me a penalty notice saying if I pay the amount in 21 days...He did want to take my upstairs to pay the fee but I said I'm going to pay online so he gave me a penalty fee notice paper. I went back to my office and paid the £40 straight away.

The question for tonight is, would these guys investigate me further as I might have traveled before through a zone 1 with a zone 2-3 card. The guy did not mention anything further as I said I was sorry and will pay the fee.

To rectify my situation I went tonight and upgraded my ticket to be correct for travelling (I have a paper ticket, not Oyster and buy monthly).

Very paranoid tonight that I might have to go to court or something. I will pay whatever penalty they want as long as I dont get a criminal record.

Thanks for you advise in advance
Swan

If that's the first time you have come to the attention of TfL for your fare-dodging, then since you paid the penalty fare it is likely not to be taken any further. If they decide to look into it, they will write to you, upon which you can post details of the letter here and we'll try to help. TfL is less likely than other operators to accept cash settlements when it has decided to prosecute, as it is public sector.

But for your own sake, don't do it again!

No, you have paid the (Penalty) Fare requested, and that is the end of the matter.

If they had reason to believe you did this regularly then they would have taken it further.

And to add to Yorkie, it is unlikely you'd have been issued with a Penalty Fare if they wanted to Prosicute. If you were just caught out and paid, I personally would think that's an end to it, don't do it again, because you are now known and on 'record'.

What do you mean by you "might have"? Have you or have you not? Surely you know the answer.

It should be the end of the matter as far as this incident is concerned, unless there is something you haven't told us about. Whether you have done it before or not, let it be a lesson and don't do it again.

If you have a Zones 2-3 Travelcard, try get it on Oyster next time, so you don't have to worry about straying into Zone 1 next time without having purchased an extension beforehand.

The answer is yes I have traveled before on a paper ticket through a zone 1. If I read through all the other blogs I've notice something. 1) no statement was taken, 2 nobody read my rights. He did not say I'm going to get another letter. All I got was a penalty with my name and address on at the bottom it says ticket for zone2/3 with ticket number. At the top it says travel from cwarf to bank. The on the side it says £80 or 40 in 21 days. And of course the 6 digit code at the top. I went online to ircas and paid the penalty.

Can the use the monthly ticket number and search further? As I said the ticket has been changed and I will never ever travel like that again.

The 5-digit number? No, they can't, however if you have been in trouble before then they could investigate using your name and address.

It's good you've changed your ticket, however it will still be more convenient to have it on Oyster in case you need to stray outside your zones again (to Zone 4 for example).

5/6 digit number of the penalty invoice that I used to pay the penalty online. Nope first ever TFL issue in 11yrs. One parking fine 4 years ago. The other number was zone 2/3 ticket number. I thought if he would have prosecuted me then he would have kept the ticket, but he gave it back and I said sorry. Paid the fine 30min later and got email conformation.

Under Schedule 17, section 8 of the Greater London Authority Act 1999, and related instructions from the Mayor's office, then as you have paid a Penalty Fare you cannot be prosecuted for that journey. However this can be looked in to for other journeys.

If that's the first time you have come to the attention of TfL for your fare-dodging, then since you paid the penalty fare it is likely not to be taken any further.
TfL's prosecutions only covers London Buses services, at present TfL and London Underground operate separate systems with separate databases.
