Cattle Trains In Europe

G'day everyone,

Back in the 1980's me and my pals caught an overnight train from Latour de Carol to Gare d'Austerlitz. As we made our way through the mountains (including plenty of low cloud) we passed through (or maybe even stopped at at) a station which had a cattle dock. The facility did certainly not look derelict and led one to believe that the line still carried cattle at the time. It would be great if someone could verify this for me.

In addition, again in the late 1980's while on a beach in (i think) Juan les Pins i saw a freight train head towards Marseillle formed of covered stock with cow's faces on the side of them. I can only assume that this had come from Italy but i had no way of telling whether they were carrying livestock. I would love to hear from anyone who can verify this.

Correct!

In the 1980s SNCF had a surge of interest in cattle transport and made up a fleet of 2 axle and bogie specialised wagons in yellow with a brown cow symbol.

However, it only lasted a few years and in the 1990s most of the wagons could be seen stored/dumped across France where the yellow livery soon faded!

Incidently there are a few cattle trains still running in the United Kingdom as well,

Yes its called a class 142 and you can find many of them in the north-west and they are absolutely packed during rush hour.
