Cats and Dogs in Barnsley Station Roof

The Cawthorne Dragon at Barnsley Station was at the receiving end of some special treatment last week when Textile Craft students from the University of Huddersfield arrived to wrap him up ahead of this week’s wintery weather.

‘Stitch the Line’, a unique art project funded by the East Peak Innovation Partnership and sponsored by the Penistone Line Partnership and Northern Rail, saw stations from Stocksmoor to Barnsley decorated by a range of work produced by the students and local craft groups.

Crocheted seat covers were spotted at Penistone; cushions appeared at Stocksmoor and colourful bunting and quilted panels popped up at Dodworth.

Students travelled on-board a Northern Rail service from Huddersfield to Barnsley, discussing the work on display with passengers and handed out copies of a free arts and crafts directory.

Themes differed at each of the stations, with some reflecting local history and the rural nature of the communities with the project aiming to raise awareness of local craft studios and galleries along the route.

Drew Haley, Client and Stakeholder Manager for Northern Rail, comments: “This is an industry first and a great example of communities working together to promote rail travel in a creative way.”

Rowena Chantler of Penistone Line Partnership, said: “This is our third year of working in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and it was inspiring to see how the project motivated passengers at the station to get crafting, we were thrilled with the feedback.”

We used to have a station cat called Diesel at Inverness. He was kept company by another cat called Gasket who were evicted from their home by the Eastgate centre's expansion. Diesel died back in either 2009 or 2010 and apparently he was quite a celebrity. They've got a memorial plant-pot beside his cat basket beside the gate at platform 6.

Grantham station had a cat as well...it was called Shag. It was astute enough to look both ways before crossing the track from the supervisors office to the Downside sidings. Sadly it got run over by a taxi on the station forecourt. Shag was buried behind platform 1

Avoided the trains for all those years and eventually got done in by a taxi. Bless.
