Doubtful, remember the traction motors on the pigs are on borrowed time, and replacing them likely means the replacement of the entire traction package. Don't know if that would also mean a partial rewire. That's not going to be cheap to do

I'm not quite sure what your trying to say as I'm stating keeping the 442 isn't feasible.

But your earlier post confusingly refers to them 'releasing 16 units'? Could you perhaps explain what you actually meant, I didn't actually follow it either...

The original poster stated putting all 442s onto Brighton express would release enough 377s to replace all the 313s on Coastway.

Checking the new stock book and its only 16x 377 off peak on the Brighton Express services meaning you'd not free enough units to release the 313s.

There are enough 442s, I just assumed that you could find enough 377s working fast services and didn't think to try and work out how many 377s worked the Brighton fasts. Are those 16x 377s the entire stock requirement for off-peak Brighton Expresses or will there be other stock (presumably the new Gatwick Stock and/or Thameslink class 700s) in the mix too?

What would the cost of the traction package replacement of all 24 units be verus the cost of the same number of 5 car Desiros or Electrostars?

I have no idea, but SWT are re-tractioning the 455s to free up depot capacity for new trains, rather than replacing the lot with new trains, so I imagine re-tractioning is cheaper.

Re-tractioning a 455 would would only involve work on the power car, the rest of the train could be left untouched. Most of the control equipment is in an equipment case that can easily be removed - all external connections being easily disconected. I would envisage them changing just this equipment case with a new one that takes up the same connection points and the traction motors. (As the new traction motors only require 3 connections rather than 4 for the old ones they could use the old cable runs from the equipment case to the motors). And the motors could be designed to take the same mounting points as the old ones.

Thanks - that makes it clear now.

Its the entire current Brighton Express off peak working in this timetable. Note the extensions in GatEx will have some effect, properly lowering the requirement by around 4 units. Thameslink 700s will not affect the figures.

No problem, glad I could clear things up.
