It probably would but come on. You can’t expect people to use the end to end journey when the car is 3x faster than the bus. That’s just way too slow!

How would you speed the journey up, given that in the absence of much (if any) e-2-e demand the route’s viability depends on intermediate traffic? It may just be a case of accepting that for inter-urban routes like this the bus will never be able to compete with the car on journey times.

That’s more a problem in a privatized bus market, if you want to know a solution then you could run a Slough to Aylesbury service that is similar to the former route 353 and 55 except maybe could serve Wexham Park Hospital as it is a major destination.

Route 55 is just basically an extension of route 50 Aylesbury - Wendover heading to Chesham via Great Missenden and Amersham. If you combine these routes together and drop the Chesham section on 55 then you could maybe have a good interurban service.

The 353 used to be my local bus, no one ever who got on at Slough stayed on until Berkhamsted, let alone Amersham/Chesham…

I updated my post now to be more specific :)
What I’m saying is there has never been a market for travel between Slough and Amersham, Arriva tried what you’re suggesting diverting the 353 to Hemel Hempstead but to no avail. There simply isn’t the demand for long distance bus travel in that part of the world and there never has been.

I’m suggesting a through service form Aylesbury to Slough. The point of this service isn’t necessarily for it to be busy and packed with passengers, it’s supposed to improve mobility in that part of Buckinghamshire as that’s what buses are supposed to do.

Best way to improve connections between Aylesbury and Slough would be an express bus Slough -Maidenhead - High Wycombe and then the HW to Aylesbury train, with integrated ticketing. A through bus will be too slow to attract enough passengers to pay for any through service

But why would you travel on a bus all the way from Slough to Aylesbury when it’s quicker to go via High Wycombe? Hertfordshire tried recently with this sort of service and now they’re withdrawing one of the routes because no one used it.

If the 353 in that incarnation was well used, then it would likely still be running!! The fact that it isn't speaks volumes!!

I'll also comment that Amersham Garage was one of the first LCBS garages to be converted to full one-man operation (in 1971) ... there was a reason for that as well!!

The point of the through service is not for people to take the full journey. It’s mainly to provide direct connections from towns like Chalfont St Giles to Aylesbury, Great Missenden or Amersham Hosptial, and maybe Great Missenden and Amersham Hospital to Wexham Park Hospital and Slough.

(But the £3 fare cap does give a good reason to do the full journey)

Just had a timetable leaflet for the, soon to be revised, One service in the post. It's good to see this approach to people who might not normally think of catching a bus. Hopefully the same approach is being taken along the line of other enhanced routes.

Carousel have lost the 149/194 to Red Rose who are numbering services 55/A/B as an extension of the 50 from Halton Camp. This restores a through service from Chesham and the villages to Tring as well as new connections to Wendover and Aylesbury.

Yes, we’ve received two copies of the leaflet for the 850. It shows what a good service it is. However the timetable shows a few reductions at shoulder time. The second bus into Wycombe has gone and the half hourly service now starts at 4.30 instead of 5.30. I hope that Carousel make sure that the buses after 4.30 are reliable and punctual or else potential passengers will be put off. The last bus from Wycombe remains far too early, it would be more useful if there were one or two later journeys. The service is not good for connecting with the train at Wycombe but the geography of the town makes that difficult. But it remains a very good service.

Is it too expensive to run a low demand trip run to increase passenger numbers on the other trips?

I had a postal drop for the enhancement along London road talking about the new links to Amersham and Chesham on Route 105. Route 275 into Oxford has also been lost, but they have gained the 156,158 and 160 services around Marlow which appeared to be slightly enhanced from the current Red Eagle service.
The school return will be interesting with several new services to Henley College and the Route 5 that linked Wycombe to a school in Hazlemere which ran with a duplicate now withdrawn, potentially pushing a lot of school traffic onto normal routes or back into cars.

A response to your question…

….and that they have been busy introducing additional services with a consequent impact on driver resources.
It's not really a good response just so you know.

So what I should take from this is that the cost of running a low demand trip isn't worth the market share. But yeah I guess drivers are a problem.

So what I should take from this is that the cost of running a low demand trip isn't worth the market share. But yeah I guess drivers are a problem.

Look at it this way . . . a driver duty (with on-costs) based on (say) £20 per hour, with a guaranteed day of (say) 8 hours will need to achieve income of £160. That's assuming that the bus itself, with all associated charges, is paid for elsewhere during the day; and also assuming (for this purpose) zero fuel cost.

Now . . . that one low-cost trip doesn't quite look so low-cost now, if that is all that driver duty will effectively operate!! Yes, that trip "could" be covered on overtime, but with the length of most driver duties nowadays, such coverage might not always be possible, and so the trip would be cancelled at the last moment, with all the howls and screams of protest that would bring. Better not to offer the trip for now, but put it in the back pocket for the next schedule change.

When I was driving for LCBS, there were, very very occasionally, trips shown "uncovered" . . . but our driving duties were considerably shorter, and a trip in the shoulder peak could be covered relatively easily. It was, even then, always a last resort to issue a schedule with uncovered trips, though . . . for just that reason!!

Frankly, with all that Carousel are doing for bus services in the area, it's churlish to nit-pick about one "nice to have" journey!! We could always ask Arriva to come back . . . .

As with so many things it depends on the specific circumstances. It will probably require an extra bus, if you are talking about filling a gap caused by peak running times, otherwise you assume they would have one in there so you are looking at it needing to generate several hundred pounds per day extra revenue. It may result in needing an extra driver shift, particularly if you are talking about start/end of the day as it may take the existing duty over hours, which may be considered difficult to accommodate if you have been expanding anyway recently or if you are struggling for drivers anyway so it may not be worth doing and risking reliability on the core services (& again an extra driving shift you are looking at needing to find significant sums of money).

Whilst the calculation will vary from operator to operator, service to service and circumstance to circumstance you are looking at (so the following are very high level ball park not specific quotes), for each extra hour of work, needing to find between £30 & £50 in extra income to cover your costs or around £300-£500 for an extra bus or around £100-£300 for extra driving shifts. So you need to be relatively confident of some significant income generation coming in to add something that requires extra resources, operators can and often do run stuff for less than their normal financial returns if they have other justifications and there will always be cases where there are hidden factors that reduce the money you are looking for in certain circumstances but that gives you an idea of normal calculations.

It's not just the marginal cost of that trip it also depends on how else that resource can be deployed.

Having said that, cutting at the margins can be poor marketing as it reduces passenger confidence that there will be "another one behind" if a bus is missed.

I missed a comma out between That, and the next word, whilst doing it on my iphone, and I had referenced your statement above. Still, if you now wish to have a more considered response...

Some bus industry professionals at Carousel, with a mass of operational data and local experience, have been very busy in developing the business over the last year. They have worked with Bucks CC (and other local authorities) to develop the local bus network and are making a decent fist of it, supported in part by s.106 and BSIP funding where appropriate allied to commercial initiatives.

They have taken a view as to the best and most appropriate use of resources. That equates to understanding the impact on overall usage by the changing of the shoulder or peak frequencies, with cost benefit analysis against placing that resource into the service pattern AND against an ongoing scarcity of drivers (though this is much improved compared to the nadir of 2022). As @Dwarfer1979 states above, it's not about the marginal cost of a driver but the full cost of that resource (and I would suspect that Carousel's costs in that part of the world are considerably higher). As it is, Carousel are (like many operators) having to battle traffic congestion in the peak and adjusting resources/headways as it is e.g. an extra five minutes into every journey between Wycombe and Beaconsfield in the peak.

I didn't mean to cause such a heated set of when I mused that a couple of extra journeys on the 850 might be 'useful'! First I understand the costs involved, second I agree wholeheartedly that Carousel, with Bucks CC input, have made great improvements to the 850 and all the services around Wycombe and have made a very good fist of operating them reliably, and finally, no I do not want Arriva back! I do not disagree with what anyone has said on this.

My comments was getting at one possible market from Marlow would be to Wycombe and onward connections on the train, as the trains from Marlow are not brilliant. But with the last bus back from Wycombe at 21.30 this cuts out many all-day options, not helped by the bus not going very near the station anyway. This early last bus also cuts out the option of a night out in Wycombe. But I don't think anyone goes to a night out in Wycombe, except to the theatre. That is ruled out using the bus as performances do not finish until well after 21.30 - but probably most people use the car anyway. In fact I suspect far more people come from Wycombe for a night out in Marlow than the other way round. The number of Priuses doing unadvertised U-turns in the road of an evening attests to this. And with the last bus from Marlow to Wycombe around midnight this remains a good option.

What I had wondered was if a low cost option to improve the last bus, at least for a post-theatre option, was to extend a late journey on say the 32A at Booker, which was going straight to the depot, to Marlow, maybe the one leaving the bus station at 22.51. The cost would depend on whether it took the driver's duty or day over the maximum allowed or whether it was just 30 minutes more pay/overtime. And I don't know if it would generate much more revenue - it would need to be advertised in the next iteration of the 850 leaflet. Just a thought!

Just noticed that there are no times for the 79A on the website or on bustimes.org. Everything else has been uploaded although the 78 and 79 are still incorrectly shown as serving Chiltern Hills Academy.

It's not that heated :D Should've been here for the First Group discussions in 2013 (that's sounding like a Vietnam veteran, tbh). To be honest, that sort of addition of a late service is perhaps something that BSIP funding is also designed to facilitate. As you say, diverting the last 32A from Asda and down to Marlow might be a cute way of doing it though how that would impact on drivers' hours is another consideration.

I do feel for the Arriva staff locally. They were hamstrung by decisions from corporate and a consolidation with one main operator makes sense.

I share your feelings for the staff locally at Arriva. As far as could be seen the divers were doing their best but there were too few buses allocated and inadequate maintenance resources - anything roadworthy was thrown out in service. They did have a good try to operate a decent network but for whatever reason were not given the resources to make it work.

I wonder. How are the ex Arriva drivers doing at Carousel. Are they like well accepted into the team or has their been turmoil considering Carousel and Arriva were big rivals.

Given that some will have moved between companies already I can't see a tribal issue. If there had been head to head competition like the bus wars in Preston or South Manchester there could have been some animosity but it is not as if Carousel ran Arriva off the road.

Even where there appears to be quite hot competition it rarely really affects most drivers in that manner, if it manifests in real animosity it tends to be between management because they are the ones making the decisions. Drivers are always moving between local operators so this won't have been anything special in that sense. In my experience it was more difficult to get drivers to treat competition as something to be aware of and act accordingly (getting on to stand early to load to prevent the other operator sneaking in front and boarding all the passengers) though as so of the incidents in Preston showed if you go too hard it can get a little out of control so management will tend to try and avoid creating animosity between operators in the drivers and just concentrate on professional reasons for concentrating on certain actions.
