The progressive decline in First's service portfolio from the depot?
No - after exiting Bracknell in 2015, and then cutting some routes in 2017 incl. Green Line, there has been no major changes changes to First's Slough operation. Except, of course, that they are benefiting from some of the funds that Heathrow are throwing about.

Just saying that reports of the death of First Slough have been circulating since the closure of Bracknell and the relinquishing of Green Line.

It is not always possible to design a timetable that meets every demand. Given that the overall (and perceived) demand is for 3 BPH on Mondays-Fridays along the full route, the next decision is what to do with Henley-Reading. Every 40 minutes on each leg? 1 BPH via 800 will give an unbalanced 20/40 frequency on 850; and vice versa of course.

Now consider the Saturday timetable, which is 2 BPH overall . . . trying to match that to MF timings will be awkward. The "upside", by going with the 850 route every day, is that Twyford now gets a Sunday service !!

Bearing in mind that Reading are now running a new 28, at a good frequency, overall the new service pattern seems to be the best possible. It is clear, understandable and unambiguous. It is longer, but gives better journey possibilities. Carousel / Oxford aren't known for coming up with duff ideas . . . time to wait and see.

Just a brief comment about Route 1 and loadings on departures from Hemel Hempstead towards Chesham . . . I'd expect most of those passengers to be travelling as far as Bovingdon only. For sure there will be some through passengers to and across Chesham, but in my experience only a handful. Not enough to contemplate doubling the frequency; which, given the Chartridge trial, would denude Pond Park of half of its service !!
I am responding to the above and many other posts on the 800/850. It is an interesting decision to increase the service to 3bph and route them all via the 850 route, even with the Reading Buses 28, especially so soon given that Carousel have not yet operated the services in school times. It will provide a welcome improvement to the Twyford and Wargrave service and I expect they will improve their custom between Twyford and Reading. I do think there is some through traffic between Wycombe and Marlow to the 800 via Caversham and through journeys to Reading will be slower, but its reasonably marginal. I do believe there are school flows from the Caversham route to Marlow at school times. After one of Arriva's changes last year they had to hastily reinstate an 800 at school times in the morning via Binfield Heath, even though the afternoon equivalent didn't go that way and didn't run almost as often as it did.

The times for the new 850 are now accessible via Carousel's website. A good clockface every 20 minutes in the main and they have got rid of some nonsense like an 05.00 departure from Reading. But slightly disappointing with the morning arrivals into Wycombe being 07.20, 07.50, 08.25, 08.45, 09.15 before getting to 3bph. In particular I hope they allocate a double decker to the 07.00 from Reading as this will be very busy between Henley and Marlow. And a great shame that there is still no departure from Wycombe after 21.30, that is so early for a last departure to Marlow in particular - the last bus back from Reading will be at 23.10! And that's good because there is definitely nightlife in Marlow with late returns to Wycombe. I think the running time allowed in the evening will prove to be far too generous.

On the 1, the extension to Chartridge seems sensible - previously the bus just sat in Chesham for an extended period. Its not providing any peak hour service though, hopefully this extension will not cause a loss of service at other times.

With regard to operations, there are certainly breakdowns as there were in Arriva days, the difference being that they get quickly replaced by another vehicle. The 800/850 are mainly run by the B7RLEs but all other types of vehicle (except ADL E400s) do appear, including Scania deckers, Citaros, Versas and E200s. The 36/37 were initially run with double deckers but they seems to have been replaced by E200s, not encouraging if the frequency is about to be doubled. The E400s that have run seem to have turned up mainly on the 30/31 now, but only one is out today. Other ex Arriva services, eg the 32 and 33, are mainly run by E200s, new and old.

It seems ambitious to expand so much so soon after taking on Arriva's work. I think four extra on the 800/850 and three extra on the 36/37 plus possibly a little more on the existing routes. Carousel haven't yet experienced schoolday Wycombe traffic on the Arriva routes. But so far so good, I presume they know what to expect and think they have enough resources to do this. Good luck!

If the buses had time to regulate at Frascati Way or this new potential bus station then it could work. The 16 today anyways always runs late. Never seen it run ontime.
Maybe. Regulating on a bay on the side of a dual carriageway is not necessarily the best option. Bus station would make sense

Exaggerated rumours, perhaps.

I agree with the rest, but Twyford to Reading is too slow for them to improve passenger numbers significantly. Charvil and Sonning maybe, but a modest uplift because it doesn't go into Sonning village proper.

The 1C is presumably replacing the contracted Red Eagle route 77. As that vehicle interworks with routes 190 and 199 the knock on effect on the villages away from the Carousel routes is unclear.

1.) While I accept the point about First's contraction in Berks, this is partly due to Thames Valley's takeover of a lot of routes in the Maidenhead area, and doesn't prevent First running a Maidenhead - High Wycombe express service (as they have experience running the X74 into Wycombe too).

First did run a service between wycombe and maidenhead down the a404. This was about 10 years ago and didn't last long

The rerouting of the journeys to Hemel Hempstead also partially replaces the Red Eagle route 71 . . . one assumes that Bucks CC are rejigging the remaining routes. Roger French had a recent ride on the 199 (Tring) Wednesday journey, purely by chance; the loadings were pretty low. I wonder how much will remain . . . Carousel's 1B covers Winchmore Hill; the 106/107 covers Little Chalfont now, and the 41 covers Hyde Heath. The routes are so insignificant now that even BusAtlas doesn't show them !!

I have seen confirmation from BucksCC that the 71 is being rerouted over the. roads relinquished by the 1. This should allow this vehicle to cover its current interworking with the 71A and 78 (77 on Saturdays).

Yep, someone mentioned it. This doesn't mean it won't work now, with the increased population and completely different transport landscape (used to be easy to park in most Thames Valley town/city centres, apart from Oxford. Now all has changed.)

And they have just massively improved the fleet with the Enviro 400 MMCs and the Beeline livery and brand
With a fraction of the routes or buses! First used to run 19 bus routes around Slough, at a high frequency with cross town links. The 2016 reshuffle was the start of the end for them and they’ve been ran into the ground. They had a monopoly of buses in slough and decided to run it into the ground, which is why it’s good to have competition in a town and not just one operator. Hopefully we don’t see a similar state of affairs in Wycombe.

Compare this to just 7 routes today!

The reason it failed wasn’t because the demand wasn’t there, it was more due to the non existing marketing and nobody knowing about the route. I don’t know if Carousel are brave enough to give it a go though, it’s a big gamble. It ran for less than four weeks though, which i personally don’t believe is enough time to get any real traction.

We'll see, it's possible, although I think it will be Spring 2025 before Carousel make any more major moves for expansion. They need to focus on rehabilitation and integration of the ex-Arriva routes first.

As others have said most of the reduction happened years ago, how long ago is it since Thames Valley Buses picked up a few of the local services and First dropped the Greenline?

If (plucking numbers out of the air), a bus company had 50 buses in 2014, 30 buses in 2016 and still have 30 buses in 2024, can you say it’s a continuing decline as they have 20 less buses than 10 years ago?

I see your point, and I wouldn’t call it a decline, but it definitely would mean the company has a lack of interest or ambition in the area.

A lack of interest in expansion doesn't necessarily imply a lack of interest in an existing network. I suspect First are keeping their powder dry.

The 7 to Heathrow has had most of its journeys cut back from Heathrow Central to terminal 5, had its frequency halved from every 10 minutes and now has a 4 hour gap overnight instead of running 24 hours a day. That's quite a cut.

The old Slough 7 series once boasted 8 buses an hour between Slough and Heathrow. This excluded the 71 (Modern day 8) via Staines. The frequency has been quartered today vs 10 years ago.

All probably based on actual demand, and maybe a reduction in Heathrow subsidisation? Even so, it's just one route.

They still operate a pretty much 24 hour service to Heathrow on their A4 route to/from Heathrow Central Bus Station. Ultimately Heathrow Airport are paying for the overnight services and specifying the service frequencies.

Don't forget the A4 which runs every 15 minutes and mirrors the old 77 East of Slough then 76 west of Slough. So that 7 and hour instead of 8, but Langley only gets 3 instead of 6.

Sunday services have improved significantly, clearly something Carousel feel can bring returns. The 102 (High Wycombe to Heathrow via Uxbridge) is now every 30 minutes on Sunday's, and they have introduced the X103 to Slough. The 1 Corridor to Amersham and Chesham is now also every 30 minutes also. The addition of the 104 is another step forward. Will be interesting, hope it works so we can see what next. Think Sunday PVR with the ex-Arriva routes is 28, so certainly significant.
I want to point out the all Sunday improvements are funded by Buckinghamshire County Council.

They don't have many routes and that was their most frequent - though I hadn't realised how often the A4 is - it bypasses the stop I used to get the 7 from into Heathrow occasionally. The road in Burnham I used to live on has gone from 2 First buses an hour and a 53 every 2 hours to no buses at all.

Earlier I passed StreetLite 402 on the 850 - except it was taking the 800 route south of Henley having missed out the town centre. A passenger was talking to the driver but it didn’t turn back. It then went totally wrong in Caversham and doubled back, rather pointless as it wasn’t supposed to be there anyway.

Better I took a B7RLE on the 800 yesterday and the new driver had an experienced guide. Good that new drivers are being employed as several more will be needed with the new timetables.

On the vehicle side the new E400s seem to be very rare. The 30/31 are mainly deckers and the 36/37 have more B7RLEs and the 800/850 see all sorts. It may change when school starts!

I was on the bus from henley to marlow last week (dont kmow if 800 or 850) and the driver was using a satnav.

I suppose a sat-nav set to go to Reading would take the 800 route from Henley and not loop through the town as described by RELL 6L. It would also send the bus over Reading Bridge and miss Caversham centre.

Maybe there would be a case for signs similar to London type buses on diversion signs to indicate routes when many drivers are new to these them.

Is this only a problem on 800/ 850 or are there anecdotes of wrong roads being taken on other routes?

As I live on the revised route for the 1 I will be watching bustimes with interest in September to see if the drivers manage to keep to the prescribed roads.

That's 8 single decks replaced with 4 double decks

It's the distance from HW that makes things difficult for many, a lot of the bus drivers at Carousel won't have spent a lot of time driving in or near Reading in their personal lives before Carousel got the route, and even if they have been, they will have probably approached it from the M4/A329(M)/A404 direction as that is, of course, far faster than the A4155

It seems strange to me that the 275 is a Carousel service considering it stays away from High Wycombe all day. How do they do driver changes?

Wouldn’t it be better run by Oxford Bus Company?

Its not the only service to not be in Wycombe all day as the two buses used on the 577/581/583 also stay away until later in the day. One works back on a 103 from Slough arriving back at 19.20, the other normally runs back out of service from Hazlemere to pick up a 103 from Wycombe to Windsor and back.
