Welcome to the forum!I need to travel from Carlisle to Glasgow on Sunday 12th June to arrive in Glasgow by Noon - any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks
No worries. It'll be daylight of course at that time of the year in Carlisle, but still somewhat 'early doors' to be up and about on a Sunday. Thanks that's what I thought - it looks like we'll have to carry on up to Glasgow the day before - don't fancy a 5:35 start - appreciate your reply
Holidays and early starts don't go well togetherNo worries. It'll be daylight of course at that time of the year in Carlisle, but still somewhat 'early doors' to be up and about on a Sunday.
Did have a quick look to see if you can get to Glasgow for noon that Sunday by train (travelling via Newcastle and Edinburgh) but that's not possible either.
Thank you - I just never realised Sunday morning services were so poor - thanks for the information thoughThere is a 79 bus Carlisle to Dumfries, then connect at Dumfries to the X74 to Glasgow, but first 79 to Dumfries on a Sunday is 10.10am, although first 79 is at 8.40am, but that only goes as far as Annan, not sure the cost will be but will have to cab it from Annan to Dumfries for the 10.45 to Glasgow.
From Dumfries there's an X74 to Glasgow, which is 2 hourly on Sundays, first bus is 06.45 from Dumfries, the X74 takes 2 hours 10 minutes
Stagecoach operate both 79 & X74, however they're operated by separate Stagecoach divisions, so through tickets won't be available
Unfortunately getting anywhere Sunday mornings is dreadful in the UK, even National Express isn't much of a help, as there are 2 early services to Glasgow, but there the overnight coaches from Birmingham & London, that call at Carlisle at 04.50 & 05.35 respectively, no chance of making Glasgow for 12pm unless you cab it part of the way.
Thank you so much - I wish I'd found this forum a couple of days earlier - you've all been so helpful - Carlisle/Newcastle/Edinburgh/Aberdeen would have worked just fine. We'd originally planned to have an overnight stop in Carlisle just for a change of scenery but have booked a night in Glasgow instead so all sorted for this time. We're at such an advanced age that we now have bus passes so trying to make the most of them rather than taking our car (my 'back seat driver' can be very stressful haha). If you reframe the question as how to get from Carlisle to Aberdeen in time to catch the 1700 ferry there are two alternatives.
Leave Carlisle at 0954, change at Newcastle, Edinburgh and Dundee and arrive Aberdeen at 1627.
If that's cutting it a bit fine then leaving Carlisle at 0844, changing at Newcastle and Edinburgh will get you to Aberdeen at 1505.
Trainsplit.com will find you the best tickets depending on your party and railcards held
Glad we could help.Thank you so much - I wish I'd found this forum a couple of days earlier - you've all been so helpful - Carlisle/Newcastle/Edinburgh/Aberdeen would have worked just fine. The bus pass is great! It should be valid for travel to Carlisle but National Express are telling me they don't accept it?Glad we could help.
Those of us in Scotland, Wales and London are lucky to get our bus passes at 60 and I make good use of mine!
In England and Wales there is a distinction between long distance coaches such as National Express and Megabus and local bus services and concessionary passes aren't valid on the former. I don't think that's the case in Scotland. The bus pass is great! It should be valid for travel to Carlisle but National Express are telling me they don't accept it?
They aren't a Scottish operator - you can use the pass on local services with Scottish operators to/from Carlisle or Berwick or Scottish Citylink but not National Express. The bus pass is great! It should be valid for travel to Carlisle but National Express are telling me they don't accept it?
Ah okay thank you - I couldn't 'see' any other bus operator from Scotland to Carlisle. They aren't a Scottish operator - you can use the pass on local services with Scottish operators to/from Carlisle or Berwick or Scottish Citylink but not National Express.
Thanks Dai - useful to knowIn England and Wales there is a distinction between long distance coaches such as National Express and Megabus and local bus services and concessionary passes aren't valid on the former. I don't think that's the case in Scotland.
My Welsh pass will get me to Bristol on a bus but not on a National Express coach.
Citylink certainly don't, but there are local cross border services, not designed for connecting from further afield though really. I imagine the pass is only valid to Carlisle and Berwick because those are the nearest large town/city from various small communities just over the border in Scotland and its for locals to go for shopping etc - an arrangement of convenience you might say.Ah okay thank you - I couldn't 'see' any other bus operator from Scotland to Carlisle.
Ah that makes sense indeedCitylink certainly don't, but there are local cross border services, not designed for connecting from further afield though really. ThanksThanks Andrew that might just come in handy sometimeYou can get to Newcastle with your Scottish bus pass on Peter Hoggs Jedburgh to Newcastle service that runs once a day.

Thanks very much - I'm learning lots of useful things hereBorder's Buses run the X95 Carlise-Hawick-Galashiels/Hawick-Galashiels-Edinburgh (whilst mostly split there are one or two through Carlisle-Edinburgh journeys (and vice versa)

Though on Sundays the earliest bus is 1120 to Galashiels and the only through service to Edinburgh is at 1420 from Carlisle.Border's Buses run the X95 Carlise-Hawick-Galashiels/Hawick-Galashiels-Edinburgh (whilst mostly split there are one or two through Carlisle-Edinburgh journeys (and vice versa)
