A message to all who might be contemplating an overnighter at Carlisle shortly.
Don't bother, I and a few others went down last nght to view the evenings
entertainment and forthcoming engineers trainson possessions. The station
manager has banned all rail enthusiasts and general public from the station area
between the hours of 01.30 and 05.15(last and first trains) from last night. The
reason a fellow(supposed) enthusiast from Northampton did an overnighter last
week and in there wisdom decided to write a letter of complaint to the station
manager exercising there unhappiness at the station cleanliness and lack of
facilities for people on the station overnight.Anybody who knows the railway
network realises that there aren't many stations open overnight and because a
few idiots they close all facilities to stop vandalism. If this person had or
has an ounce of sense they would of come prepared with food,drink, extra
clothing and a key to the disabled toilet. So all I can say is thankyou very
much for alienating the station staff of which I'm good friends with(or was) for
now stopping me and hundreds of others who come here year in year out enjoying
their hobby at one of the only stations you were allowed onto overnight without
grief from staff.I don't know the full story as to what happened or what was
said, or even the evening in question but it would be nice to find out via the
various rail web sites who the t~~~~~ is. So I'm as you can tell upset because
of this and I WANT to find out who the a###### is so we all can name and shame
them.The annoying part of the story is that a group of lads from Derby area
turned up last night at 12.30 to do an overnighter, but the minute they set foot
on the station they were told they were leaving at 01.30 after the southbound
sleeper had left.This resulted in a few cross words between them and the station
staff. Plus the signs didn't come out to play until 22.00 when they would of had
the letter from about 09.00 that morning, resulting in a friend of mine who
travels from Barrow-in-Furness to do overnighters regularly being kicked of the
station with no money and a valid train ticket back to Barrow for saturday
morning being left outside the station perimeter. Yes the station perimeter you
say, British Transport Police patroling the entrances including the ramp
ejecting people of the ramp!!!!Anyway I've had my rant all I want now is the
culprit responsible for possibly upsetting hundreds of fellow rail enthusiasts
and to hope that this wont last long and normal service will be resumed shortly.

yes I must admit I wouldnt mind an all nighter on carlisle

I still do a few all nighters with a few friends who I`ve been chasing trains with since the late 50s, although we mainly run round Europe these days and visit the preservation sites, we still have the odd few UK trips and all nighters, something we occassionally do is stay all night near large yards, the last time we did it was at Bashford hall Crewe, after getting permissing from the landowner or seting up on a public footpath, what we do is to set up a large fishing umbrella, take the large fishing bedchairs and sleeping bags and all the photographic gear of course, we take lots of food warm drings and a small colemans stove ior cooking and then commence our all night vigil, its amazing what comes through these yards at night and what arrives and leaves giving plenty of opportunity for photographs and videos, no hassle, better shots than many station shots and no one to give you any hassle. Obviously if you are young you need to tell someone where you are going and go with a few friends and take mobiles, but these places can be quite amazing at night. A few years ago we dod the same in Djon in France, we set up in a field alongside a coloured light leading into the engine shed yard, it was amazing what went by through the night, lots of frieght and many being threble headed which most stopping at the signals just giving us enough time to get a few decent shots. Possibly a location nearCarlisle exists which lends itself to this sort of thing?

Goes to show that it only takes one person to f*** it up for everybody else. Sorry to hear that a potential meet is practically dead in water now, and ends a long tradition of enthusiasts trekking to Carlisle to do an overnighter.

How sad for one person who seems to have no brain in his head as some one mentioned if he was planning on an over nighter he should have came prepared with provitions although when i was down years ago there was a chippy across the road opened till 03.00, but back to my point he could have put in a suggestion to open facilities not a complaint..

I can't blame the staff really. Why should they keep facilities open when there are no passengers about (with the exception of maybe one or two spotters every now and again), and if people are going to complain about it then of course it's going to upset the staff who (as we've all now learnt) clearly welcomed enthusiasts to their station overnight, rather than having to put up with them.

Oh no, of course not. The staff were being very generous in my opinion to let people stay on the station overnight!

It's just a shame that somebody obviously hasn't realised this, and has ended up spoiling it for everybody.

Gutted to hear about this. Carlisle overnighters were always fun (exhausting too, but usually worthwhile), particularly if going with friends as it then became quite a social event where you could have a laugh and get some top shots.

A shame someone has decided to ruin it, I am in support of someone writing to the station manager about it in an attempt to overturn the decision. I'll happily write it (got quite a few days in which I have little else to do!), although I'd need input from other forum members.

I have just spent 30 minutes talking to Virgin Customer Services who were unaware of this issue and they in turn spoke to the Duty Mananger at Carlisle who confirmed that they had not withdrawn the goodwill to overnighters at Carlisle. The Duty Manager told Virgin Customer Services that enthusiasts must report to him in accordance with the guidelines of National Rail and BTP.

So if you clear it with the DSM at the station and they know nothing about it who authorised the signs to be put up on friday night at 10pm. As the manager of the station is a woman who hates rail enthusiasts and has been looking for an excuse for ages since she took over to ban enthusiasts why do you have to report to the DSM when its not his decision as was stated to us on friday night only the managers?? Virgin trains customer services won't know anything about it because she is there golden girl staff member who has brought profit to the station in her time by various devious means.
Two fellow friends from carlisle have questioned the manager today and as far as she is concerned the ban still stands, as her word is final!!! So who is right, us, her or Virgin Trains?? Answers on a postcard addressed to The Manager at carlisle Station

it seems strange that someone who works for the railways hates the very people who pay her wages, are you sure this is right??, if rail enthuisiasts are being victimised and harressed by this person then it needs to be taken to the next level, she may be the station manager, but we need to explain that we havent actually given her the station, she is a public servant working on our behalf and if this woman is prejudice against those with an interest in the business of rail travel, then I dont really feel she is fit and proper to act in a position as a custodian of our railway network.
