Has any qualified drivers considered seeking a transport career whether it be in driving, ops standards, safety, competency development, line management, trainers etc in the UAE. I’ve always heard that jobs are well paid in that region and of course there’s the added incentive of it being tax free. Sacrifices will have to be made and thoroughly thought out obviously (family, way of life, loss of competence over here etc) but I imagine 3-5 years or maybe a bit longer of a decently paid tax free salary could probably set you up nicely to retire back to the UK and enjoy your fruits...?

I don't think I'd fancy living in a country that persecutes women, dissapears people who speak their minds, where domestic violence perpetrated against women and children is legal, where having sex outside marriage gets you banged up and being gay will land you in the nick for ten years.

Truer words were never spoken and maybe I should have considered how much of their way of life conflicts with the British values we have here when posing the question. It’s weird cos when I visited Dubai on holiday not to long ago it never really crossed my mind that showing affection to my gf in public could land me in a spot of bother, I suppose some sacrifices are to perilous to make.

It would be interesting to hear from someone who has done this though, I imagine the knowledge and experience qualified drivers or rail professionals have would be in demand around the world.

Didnt mean to put you off it mate, its just recently I was talking to a bloke that was offered a job in Dubai (not railway) and he did some research into it and decided it wasn't a society he wanted to live in, however much the wages were. That promoted me to have a look at it myself and a quick Google search reveals all kinds of human rights abuses and draconian laws. There is also a lot of stuff going on there to do with forced labour of domestic and poor immigrant workers, similar to the modern slavery type stuff we've been hearing about the stadium building for the Qatar world cup. I dont think that would directly affect British nationals but it's a good measure of that society. Definitely not a place for me, although I love the idea of building up enough cash to retire in a few years my conscience wouldn't allow it. Like you, I would be interested to hear from anyone who has gone out there to work on the railway.
