Off to Cardiff next weekend for a special treat away. Nice hotel and a few things planned - speed boat safari trip, city tour etc.

Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in Cardiff please? Trying to avoid a chain and looking for an independent, atmospheric, good food and wine place. Seafood, meat, bistro, upmarket Indian - or others - am open to ideas!

Does anyone know about the geography of stations in Cardiff. We are staying in the Bay (St. Davids Hotel). Is Cardiff Bay station close by? Or are we better getting a taxi from Central?

We have booked tickets to Cardiff Bay but have to change somewhere between central and there?! Do Get to go on the bubble car unit?

Looking forward to it!! Any seasoned Cardiff travellers who wish to pass on useful hints - gratefully received.

Well, I do, but rather than describe the geography of stations in Cardiff, it may be easier to look at a map. (OS map | Google maps). I would walk it myself as I think taxis are too expensive, generally, but it depends on how far you're prepared to walk.

Yes, Queen Street, and only if you're very lucky!

I hope you enjoy your trip to Cardiff. I'm sorry I can't recommend any good eating places that correspond to what you are looking for, as I have only ever eaten in chain restaurants in Cardiff. One notable exception is the Louis on St Mary Street, but that is more of a lunchtime place, really, and is a bit of a 1960's throwback.

I cna recommend some city centre pubs. If you like real ale, as we do, head tot he City Arms. On our last visit they were serving beer from a barrel stood behind the bar (as well as several hand pumps), it was very well kept too. There is also the Goat Major and the Rummer Tavern (one of the oldest pubs in town) as well as all the usual chains. Most of these are near to or on St Mary's Street.

I wouldn't bother with the train from the Bay if you want to get to the city centre. As Yorkie says, it's very walkable, but the bus is more convenient if you don't want to walk it, as it will undoubtedly take you closer to where you want to go!

Make sure you have exact change as well if you intend to use the bus.

I wouldn't say the hotel is walkable from the bay station, but the route does involve walking through the bars/restaurants at the bay which you could enjoy
