Cardiff to York (October)

I want to make a day trip to York to look at some accident reports in the NRM archives. Having booked some time off from work, I intend to go on one of the following days in October: Monday 11th, Wednesday 13th, Friday 15th or Saturday 16th.

I'd like to get at least four hours in York; the NRM is open from 10 until 5.

I've got a Y-P railcard. Open return fares are roughly £60, as set by Crosscountry. Direct advances are scarce. Sub £40 is my price bracket.

I've found cheap advance fares splitting at Manchester, but I've travelled the Marches line so often I'd like to take another route on at least one leg.

Does anyone have any suggestions to this end? I'd consider advance fares and/or standard tickets. Interesting routes or journeys are a positive!

You can try the cross-country route via Bristol, which takes roughly the same time as changing in MAN.

Haven't checked all dates, but there are some advance non-flexible £16.85 singles (with railcard) for BRI-YRK on the Wednesday 13th. This could possibly be further reduced by splitting at Birmingham. BRI-YRK takes about 4 hours. BRI-CDF is about an hour and there seems to be plenty of advance singles at £2!

Oh and forgot to mention, if you're a student and have an NUS extra card, you should get another 10% off the price quoted above should you book through the crosscountry website.

try looking at splitting via manchester..

e.g cardiff central to manchester with arriva trains wales, advance fares start from £7.90 with your railcard

and Manchester to York with Transpennine, advance fares start from £4.30 with your railcard

and as i can see lowest priced ones are available now !

If you fancy a different route home on Saturday 16th, EC are diverting via Lincoln that afternoon due to ECML engineering works.
I suspect most of the cheaper priced adv tickets have already gone but look for a York-KX advance from EC website (10% discount if booked online through EC) & also get a Paddington-Cardiff one
