April 25th Return (Monday Bank Holiday). Standard price with YPR is £55.70.

Have split it the following;

Cardiff to Cwmbran £4.55
Cwmbran to Church Stretton £12.50
Church Stretton to Manchester £15.80
Manchester to Preston £6.65

Totalling £39.50.

The other option i've found is;

Heart of Wales Circle Day Ranger £19.80
Shrewsbury to Manchester £13.85
Manchester to Preston £6.65

Totalling £37.30

Would the HOW Circle Day Ranger be valid for a return journey between Cardiff and Shrewsbury? The 'circle direction' part has given me doubts.

Any other splits i've missed or other suggestions?

Thanks

ATW state:

Apologies if I'm being thick, lol!

But, my confusion lies with 'in either direction'. Does that mean you must go on the train in one direction and not double back on yourself, i.e a return journey. Or is it merely to express that you can go either way, whenever you want as much as you want.

Cheers,

Unlimited travel is well described by whenever you want as much as you want.

No, unless you take a detour from Craven Arms towards LLandridnod Wells

Terms of HOW Rover include said:
At least one part of your journey must be made up or down the Heart of Wales Line (between Swansea and Shrewsbury via Llandrindod Wells)

Strictly speaking, the HoW Circular Day Ranger is only valid in one direction, except on the HoW line itself (Craven Arms - Llanelli). Though how this can be enforced I am not at all sure.

So what I suspected is right re: the one-direction. Like you say, unsure how they could enforce the same.

Have now looked and found the following;

Cardiff to Hereford

Midland Day Ranger
Hereford to Birmingham
Birmingham to Crewe

Crewe to Preston

As it is a bank holiday, how would I go about purchasing a ranger ticket? As I presume Hereford station will be closed?

Cheers,
Dan

The station may or may not be closed, but if it is, and there's no ticket machine, you can buy it on-train.

Sometimes. Depends on the ticket machine, location, operating TOC, price of petrol, exchange rate between the Swiss franc and Botswana pula, and the cost of half a gallon of milk at Tesco's :)

If you get to a station with TVM only and want to buy a ticket that doesn't appear on the machine, you are supposed to buy a single ticket that allows you to commence part of your journey and part-exchange it for the ticket you want on-train or at your destination.
