Cardiff to Hereford, today, using WAG express

Hi all,

I am travelling to Hereford today from Cardiff Central. Usually I would use one of the Manchester Pic / Holyhead trains; however I would like to use Gerald (the 57 on the WAG express). I will be returning on Monday morning (~0700). Therefore I will buy an off peak return for CDF-HFD.

The problem is, the WAG express travels to Abergavenny and then fast to Shrewsbury, without stopping in Hereford.

Is my off-peak (open) return valid for travel CDF --> Abergavenny, used with a break in my journey and to catch the next available AVY --> HFD train?I have a sneaking suspicion it isn't; in which case, what is the cheapest alternative?

I believe a Cardiff - Hereford OffPeakReturn is available for BOJ on both outward and return portions.

I may be wrong, can't check as on the android phone.

Remember that just changing trains is NOT a break of journey.

I believe a Cardiff - Hereford OffPeakReturn is available for BOJ on both outward and return portions.

It's an ATW-priced SVR (Off-Peak Return), so unsurprisingly carries the famous 8A restriction, ie. no BoJ on the outward.

However as MikeWh pointed out above, changing trains in the above circumstance does not constitute break of journey.

Just to follow this up, I travelled on the WAG express tonight. I had no problems (the guard did not even check tickets, just people counting). Had I been challenged I don't think it would have been a question - there were quite a few "window hangers", and an announcement was made at Abergavenny that those with tickets for intermediate stations should change there. Quite convincing
