Hi all

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask. I'm January I'm going to visit an old friend on my long weekend off work. Looking at Jan 19-21.

I'll be going from Cardiff to Corby and have a few options...

Cardiff-Corby via Paddington £31.25 or £46.90 (unsure which fare I would need)

Via Gloucester £26.30

Or TOC pass to Gloucester, then Gloucester-Corby W/Priv £17.05

One is significantly cheaper than the rest, being the latter. The default routing for the through fare is via London, however the time savings aren't worth it I'm my opinion. I'm looking for opinions on the best way to travel, and thus the fare to choose.

I work for TfW, so I can travel between Cardiff and Gloucester for free on our services to make the third fare possible, however, there's not much of a connection time at Gloucester using this option being only 12 minutes. I'm assuming if a cancellation or delay happens on the first leg, I wouldn't be able to claim delay repay for it.

Any advice or opinions would be much appreciated.

Minimum connection time at Gloucester is 7 minutes, so, as long as your itinerary allows for this, you'd potentially still be eligible for Delay Repay, depending, on course, on the length of the actual delay, if any, incurred getting into Corby, and which TOC was deemed to initially be at fault.

The other issue (your weekend starts on a Sunday - is that correct?) is that XC have a reputation for weekend cancellations, so you risk an extended wait at Gloucester if you use your own company (and possibly issues Birmingham-Leicester).

I would expect to be able to claim it from Gloucester on as I'd then be fare paying if I go for the third option with changes in Birmingham, Leicester and Kettering. Don't think TfW would appreciate me filling a delay repay claim for a delay between Cardiff and Gloucester if it delayed the rest of my journey  either way it's not a lot of money. Appreciate the info on minimum connecting times.. will make the choice easier.

Well, my trip would start on a Sunday, yes. I've booked the Wednesday off, so I can finish my return journey relatively late. Have to work around my friends work schedule too. That being said, cancellations to xc isn't a huge concern for me unless it delays me indefinitely. But something to keep in mind none the less

Not convinced GWR are any better on Sundays atm!

Given the apparent plague of reliability issues would it be better to go the cheapest option and try claim any additional travel costs if needed? either way, January is a while away so we'll hopefully be though the worst of reliability. Although, maybe I'm too optimistic

If you went via Gloucester, what would the routing be, to Corby? Gloucester, Birmingham, Leicester, Kettering, Corby? Maybe 5 trains. Visions of trains at Gloucester at opposite ends of that LONG platform.

That's the one. Id imagine it would be platform 4 at Gloucester though, not platform 1/2. Going towards Cheltenham I've only ever had to open the doors on platform 1&2 three times in a year  it is a really long platform though
