Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a definite date for the completion of the works at Cardiff Queen Street as all I can find on the Network Rail page is due complete 2014? If there's not any further info that's ok, also would it be possible if someone posted pictures of the station looks like just now outside and inside as I was last there May 2013 and will be back in Cardiff December 2014 and would a like a preview of how it looks. Hope this isn't too much trouble

Not got a clue I'm afraid - but I've noticed some discussion of this in the thread about the new timetable. Are any new platforms open then!?
I have no idea as my closest station is Montrose but I'll be going down to Cardiff in December which is why I asked the question, I'll guess the new platforms are open and it's just the cosmetic changes to the building needing finished as a video on YouTube shows Writestyle moving glass panels on site which is from a month ago

There are only two new platforms the new through platform (5) on the valleys bound side, and the new dedicated bay platform (1) the the shuttle to Cardiff bay neither of which are open yet.
do you think the new platforms will be open by December?

I see no reason they wouldn't open at some point either in December or before, I have no idea if they've commissioned the new points or signals as of yet.

ATW have announced that Queen Street station will remain closed on (international rugby) match days.
What does everyone think about that last point? Personally I think ATW have done the right thing.

I can't. Why not close just for the few hours surrounding the match time? So if it starts at 1500, close it from 1200 to 1800. I imagine most shoppers would be in before 12 and would be able to arrange their shopping tour so as to end up nearer to Central. Perhaps I have misunderstood.

It wouldn't be closed all day. It closes AFAIKR around kick off time (there's no problem with people getting off a train there, it's the getting back on it) and then stays closed until the next day.
the queuing system at central is very efficient and lasts all evening so reopening CQS later on wouldn't work.
Plus the two stations are only half a mile or so apart on foot.

As far as I'm aware, it isn't closed all day, just around the time of the match itself and afterwards.
I can see the sense of it, as I said, as the large numbers of travellers can be accommodated more easily at Central than at Queen St.
I just think that I'd be a little miffed if I had to go to or from that area and was faced with a detour and a queuing system! I guess that's why so many people avoid Cardiff unless they absolutely have to go there when there is match on.

Agreed. If you're a little old lady from the valleys coming down to do your shopping on a match day, the least of your worries will be diverting to Central to get home.
Let's face it, anyone coming to do shopping on a match day is fairly daft.
Anyone coming to do shopping on a match day and not leaving Cardiff before full time / before the rush is dafter.
Anyone complaining about it after the fact is dafter still.
This isn't a new thing. There have been rugby internationals in Cardiff for decades. The queuing system has been there for a while now. It works, it's efficient, well rehearsed and the best system for the circumstances. Of the four matches this summer, full time will occur at 1630ish three times and 1930 once. I would suggest that if you can't get yourself organised enough to get into and out of town early / miss the end of the match, then you deserve all the inconvenience you get.

I heard somewhere that the lines around Cardiff are going to be closed over Christmas for the new sign alling - is this still happening?
There must be few people who want to go shopping on a match day at all! I remember going to Cardiff once on the day of a football match at the Millennium Stadium. There were very few non fans about in the streets!
Those that do decide to do this may qualify for a stronger description than daft!
You're right, of course, but I was thinking more about those who don't really have a choice, such as those who have to work in the city centre, even on a Saturday!

when I went through a week or 2 ago I noted that the new platforms (1+5) have been completed with minor cosmetic works to be done, even the PIS screens are installed and were switched on (just showing a clock). Unfortunately I didn't get to see the status of the new entrance building from street level but works had progressed significantly from my last passage through the station. Cardiff Central's new platform is also taking shape rather quickly aswell. It's also good to see the new platforms at Barry, Caerphilly (my town) and Pontypridd now operational

There is a new platform at Pontypridd!? Where!? I haven't heard about that! I know there is one at Tir-Phil though.

All new platforms in system for December, but platform 3 still doesn't exist at Caerphilly after a year when a new Bay Platform 1 was created and the former Platform 1 (Up) was re-numbered.

There is definitely a lot of building work going on on the Cardiff bound side of Pontypridd, I was there yesterday.

Indeed. I believe the track has been laid for the new platform (the other side of the island platform than where the current Cardiff bound platform is) and I think (though don't quote me) that the points are in place so the new track is now connected to the main line. Can't comment on the signalling though. There have also been some changes to the valleys bound platform with a fairly large section of the platform being removed. Anyone have an idea what is going on there?

I wonder if the platform will be connected before the line is re-controlled by the SWSCC?
According to posters erected outside the station in the last few days, the new ticket office is opening on 30th November with the new platforms coming into use on 14th December.
However, I can't see how Network Rail will be completely finished with Queen St by the end of this year. There's still nothing resembling a lift shaft on the Bay line platform, and as someone who uses the station 5 days a week, there doesn't appear to be any work taking place on installing a lift to this platform at the moment. Scaffolding and a cordened off section of the platform is all that's been there for weeks now.
Also parts of the ceiling of the subway underneath the main platforms is in anything but a 'nearly completed' state.

I've been through there today, and noted the ticket barriers are finally working again. The wall on the left hand side of the passageway through to platforms is far from completion either.
I imagine work will be ongoing after December 14th.
Depends how you define 'working' :roll:
My season ticket, which happily passed through the barriers a few weeks ago now refuses to let me through, so I have to be let through by an assistant.......
Queen St is far from a fully completed, upgraded station right now.

I looked from the train going north this morning, and the steel frame for the lift is definitely there, together with some scaffolding.
I couldn't see at which stage the construction is, mind you, so I don't know how long it'll be before it's finished.
Again from the train, the outside of the new station building looks much more complete than it's been for a while. I guess that much of the work now is internal, which isn't visible.

According to leaflets that were being handed to passengers passing through Queen St today, from this Sunday......
Platform 1: Cardiff Bay
Platform 2: Services towards Penarth and Radyr (via the City Line)
Platform 3: Services towards Barry Island, Bridgend (via VOG), and trains terminating at Cardiff Central
Platform 4: Services towards Coryton, Caerphilly, Bargoed, Ystrad Mynach, Rhymney
Platform 5: Services towards Pontypridd, Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil.
Installation of a lift for Plaforms 1 & 2 is 'planned for 2015'.
How exactly are these additional platforms meant to help increase service frequency when only 1 additional Valley lines platform is being built at Cardiff Central? (presumably for Barry, Bridgend, Penarth and Central terminating services)
