Cardiff - Nottingham cancellation

Does anyone know why the 12.45 XC Cardiff to Nottingham service was cancelled today (Thurs. 1st) ?

The incoming service arrived on time and presumably shunted towards Canton to reverse and cross over and from the square outside Central, I saw the Class 170 depart empty towards Newport just before 12.45.

That's a bit odd - in my experience the guard who works it down from Birmingham works it back up.

There's sometimes* a swapping of guards at Newport to allow the incoming guard to take a break, with the relieving staff member shuttling it to Cardiff and back. The original guard then takes over again northbound from Newport.

Given the train was able to work in passenger service as far as Cardiff, where did the guard go?!


* There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to when this happens, although I would presume it's on a diagram-by-diagram basis. I'd also presume it's a Bristol guard who comes over to shuttle it over - I understand it's also Bristol crews who take the first train out of Canton every morning.

It has happened at the Nottingham end recently as well. I occasionally see ECS trains (interior lights off) come past that are normally scheduled services. There was one, I believe, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nottm end is a bit messier; that stretch is served both by Birmingham and Nottingham teams IIRC. Stock also gets interworked between Cardiff runs and Birmingham shorts.

I could understand if a train arrived at Nottingham in passenger service but was unable to go back out, as that would be a location for a Nottingham guard to end his duty, for example. It's the lack of guard from Cardiff which confuses me :P

I guess we won't know unless someone on here is familiar with the diagrams

30/12/14 5G52 1641 Nottingham to Birmingham New Street was the one that I saw. Normally 1G52 when running.

One odd consequence of the 12.45 cancellation yesterday was that the following service, the 13.45 had two working refreshment trolleys, one from Cardiff and another one joined at Newport.

There can be all sorts of reasons - someone might have just covered a bit of a job or similar to help.

No guard was just the bit from XC's performance update, no further details available.
