I have a few questions:
1) I have seen a lot more activity recently with EWS freight traffic between Cardiff, Newport Alexandra Docks yard and seemingly moving onwards towards Cwmbran and Hereford, either before or after the morning's Freightliner Powerhaul from Maindee junct.
Especially interesting are what look like new bulk mineral workings from Npt Docks each evening, with EWS branding throughout. Is this due to a (well overdue) upsurge in demand for rail freight? Does anybody have any info on these? Are these perhaps stone trains from Moreton quarry (north of Hereford)
2) I have also noted a lot more activity in general at Alexandra yard. For the last 2 weeks, there have been more wagons there than I've seen over the last 4 years. These have mostly dispersed now, but the oldest ones, along with a long line of container flats and some tanks (TTAs?) remain. Is this for any reason in particular?
3) Also, I've been noting a huge increase in mixed freights being moved between Cardiff and Newport - including on the 30th Jan, a mixed bag of car transporters, cargowagon-type things, steel flats and TTAs in the same rake! Is there any reason for this? They are all empties, and moving from Cardiff to Newport. I had wondered if they're moving stored wagons from Margam, perhaps to Toton? Any info?
4) Finally, as anybody who passes Newport Alexandra Yard heading towards Cardiff will know, there is a long-ish headshunt next to the running lines, underneath the road bridges at the south end (where a "shed" or two are often stabled). Behind the buffers is the side of a small bridge, where the SW ML passes over a small stream.
This morning, I spotted two FRED's (turned on) in the 4 ft of the shunt, which were warning of a wagon which looked like it'd run loose or had been over-enthusiastically shunted, having hit the buffers at the end, hit the side of the brige and derailed (luckily away from the mainline). Again, does anyone have any gen on this?
