My friend wishes to travel from Cardiff Central to Birmingham on Saturday 7th December, returning the same day.

Outbound on the direct xx.45 service and returning on the 21.12 via Bristol TM.

Am I right in thinking that the cheapest return ticket is achieved by splitting at Cheltenham Spa?

Thanks for your help.

But to answer your original question, an Off-Peak Return from Cardiff to Birmingham is £52.90.

But splitting at Cheltenham (or Gloucester) using day returns would cost £42.

And splitting at Hereford using day returns (but taking an extra hour, roughly) would be £35.90.

If he splits at Gloucester he can't go via Bristol Parkway on his return route (Neither can he with Hereford, but that one is a bit more obvious)

I agree, but the plan is to return on the 2112 from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads which does call at Gloucester.
