Cardiff Central-Paignton Diagram

just a quick question,
what unit is on the cardiff - paignton diagrams?

On the 2C67 (the 08:00 off Cardiff Central) is booked for 153+158.

SWT 158s sometimes turn up at Exeter St Davids but overall FGW 158s are fairly uncommon in Devon. They don't even operate the Cardiff-Taunton services any more.

Some still turn up it seems on the Cardiff to Paignton diagram...guess its pot luck really as to whats available at SPM?...

I have seen them a few times on the Cardiff - Taunton route and at least 1 works on the Great Malvern - Bristol - Weymouth route.

The Cardiff-Paignton train seems to always be 158763 at the moment. Seen it turn up by itself, with another 158, with a 150 and with a 153. It's a bit of an odd service but it's usually formed of at least a 158.

And since 2007/2008, one of the few services that operate into devon with FGW 158s...

Oh yes, the most definitely do.

A three car 158 is booked on the following diagram:
0751 Bristol-Weston
0840 Weston-Cardiff
1100 Cardiff-Taunton
1307 Taunton-Cardiff
1600 Cardiff-Taunton
1808 Taunton-Cardiff
2100 Cardiff-Westbury

And the Paignton diagram is booked a 158, that does some Taunton-Cardiff services as well.

It's the only daily service booked into Devon operated by a 158. Another visits on Friday night but leaves early Saturday morning, and only gets as far as Exeter.

Is of course, since the interfering and micro managing by our beloved DfT, Exeter depot & Devon & Cornwall sees very little 158 use anymore - bar the Cardiff Paignton diagram, whereas 5/6 years ago would have seen for instance...

A 158 Stabled in Exeter Depot...

Or a Wessex Trains 158 on the Penzance - Exeter & Beyond services...

It is most of the time, you're right.. can get everything really, including the 143s and 153s.

153s come out on the ex-Loco Hauled trains as they are they peak services from Bristol and require strengthening. Since 143s reallocated from Bristol to Exeter, only one round trip from Exeter to Cardiff is booked for a 143. A couple of years ago nearly half the services were booked for a 143.

Of course for a period in 2006/7, many Devon local services were 158 operated. A terrible use of the units, but they were nice and luxurious compared to the 142s used now.

Very True!

But i think id rather have a 142 / 143 / 150 on the devon metro main services - Exmouth - Exeter - Paignton because thats more what theyre suitable for, and 150 / 153 / 158 on the Barnstaple Branch - preferably suitably ugraded to steel sleepers, cwr & a upped speed to 90 if possible...Surely, at 39 miles, the Barnstaple Branch has to be one of the longest 'branch lines' in the country?...

It's usually 150's and 153's on Paignton diagrams now.

First Great Western's 158s are used on Cardiff - Portsmouth services, and Great Malvern - Weymouth/Brighton.

South West Trains' 158's are seen at Exeter on Waterloo services too

It's 159's on the Exeter-Waterloo line, not 158's. Plus there was a FGW 158 sat in platform 2 at St David's at Monday lunchtime, so they do still head down this way occasionally.

158's occasionally end up on exeter to waterloo services. As did the 170's when swt had them.

SWT 158s are not diagrammed west of Salsibury any longer, so any that do turn up are reacting to problems with 159s, or trains are being specifically strenghtened for some other reason...
