I'm just wondering, why is 142002 in the siding at CDF. It's been sitting there for a few day now, and I was just wondering if it's finally broken. I hope so. Those pacers are what I dread getting when going to Cardiff...

Any info would be great thanks guys!

FNW was sending you (ATW) more soon, so the RoSCO and TOC have probably decided not to carry out repairs

To operate the service, FGW will require 8 out of 12 Class 142s.

FGW have a need for 50 DMU diagrams, the new TT needs four more, plus 2 for refurb.

142s are going to be refreshed - will run 'til June 2010 for Devon services.

Will also be used to provide capacity enhancements such as 4Car services on Exmouth lines.

All from Alison Forster's presentation a few weeks ago.

What a load of rubbish! I can't see it happening as most of them will be broken! Also have fun providing two gaurds!

142002 is destined for FGW. Was sat at Chester this morning.

As far as I'm aware, 001 & 064 were at Chester as of 0800 this morning, enroute from Newton Heath to Exeter yesterday, but only got as far as Chester last night.

You don't need two guards to have a unit in multiple, unless there is a restriction on that line? I've heard the guard always needs to be in the rear unit (where 2 are joined), but don't know if it's true or not.

If you mean another guard to sell tickets, they could just use a Train Assistant or an RPI. The Severn Beach line morning services have a conductor doing tickets and doors, plus another member of staff (or two others) just doing tickets

I don't think you've ever had to have 2 guards. 22xs and 170s frequently run in multiple with only one guard.

You have to have one member of staff in each unit if they aren't through gangway'd.

Hence, driver in one, Guard in back, as they often do on Valley Lines. No need for additional staff. Do they need to be trained in safety techniques though? Say they ran a 6Car somewhere, Driver, Train Assistant, Conductor.

Doesn't seem to apply to either CT or Silverlink where frequently have 321/323s in multiple with both guard and driver in front unit. Also plenty of non-corridor DOO units around operating in pairs and 12 cars.

Is it down to each TOCs safety case?

not true at all, unless there is a local instruction in place, we run 4, 8, 12 cars with just two members of staff, iirc when there is 2x voyagers then there will be staff in both sets even if this means only catering staff in one and the tm and driver in the other.

In most cases, having a member of staff in each unit is a requirement - it's certainly part of several TOCs safety cases.
