Cardiff area timetables in c1910

Dear friends

Does anyone have access to an old timetable which would give an idea of times and frequencies of trains from Penarth Station to Saunders Road Station or right past it onto the Riverside branch to Clarence Road Station. And how different was the service on Sundays?

Also what the service frequency might have been from Penarth up the Valleys to Mountain Ash - would that have needed a change? And how different was the service on Sundays?

I have a reprint of a 1902 (IIRC) GWR timetable that should have those kind of details in it. I'll dig around for it this evening for you.

Attached is a photo of the timetable for trains from Penarth to Cardiff, and also Cardiff to Aberdare, Merthyr and Treherbert.

Most trains from Penarth run to Cardiff GWR (Central) and through to the TVR station (Queen St), but a handful go via Riverside down to Clarence Road. On Sunday there's no service to Clarence Road.

The arrival times for Penarth trains at the GWR and TVR stations seem to match up with the departure times for trains to Aberdare, Merthyr and Treherbert (and vice versa) so it's reasonable to assume that these trains worked through. It's not so obvious whether there were through carriages to both Merthyr and Aberdare on the same train, but the travel times to each are similar, so if there is a change of trains there's no significant time penalty. (These were TVR-operated services, and the GWR timetable only gives a summary.)

A timetable for GWR services from Pontypool Road to Aberdare and Neathvia Crumlin indicates that trains called at Mountain Ash roughly eight minutes before Aberdare.

The 1910 Bradshaw (reprint) gives rather more departures but is broadly similar:

to Queen St at 5.22, 6.30, 7.15, 8.30M, 10.15M, 10.40, 11.34M, 12.32M, 2.29M, 2.55M, 3.30, 3.48, 5.10M, 5.45, 6.31, 6.41, 7.0M, 7.30, 7.55, 8.30, 8.48, 9.16M, 9.45, 10.0, 10.30M, 11.24.

Journey time as in 1902, about 20 mins.
Trains marked M look as though they continued/had good connections to Pontypridd/Abercynon and Mountain Ash, total journey generally 90 minutes.

To Riverside (R) and Clarence Rd: 7.54R 8.41, 8.58, 9.19, 9.47, 11.0, 11.45R, 12.20, 1.16R, 1.49, 2.10, 3.12, 4.5, 4.34, 5.4, 5.27, 7.23R. No Sunday trains.

Sundays to QS: 8.15M, 10.20, 11.11M, 12.46, 2.10, 2.58, 3.21, 3.50, 4.18M, 5.25, 5.54, 6.56, 7.30, 8.8, 8.25M, 9.2, 9.20
