As a single unit? Are you sure? Obviously they can work in longer formations (2x3 car is common on Scotrail).

I know Midland Mainline operated a 5 car Class 170 for a while.

Nobody works 24 hours a day and sees everything but in the 4 years I worked Midland Mainline 170s, late 2000 to late 2004, there was never anything other than 3 car, 170101-110, and 2 car, 170111-117, sets in use, nor was any alteration to that ever discussed in the mess rooms

There is the possibility of a strange Etches Park move with more cars attached but I really can't see the hassle of that being worthwhile

I always remain ready to be shown the error of my ways of course ;)

Count the coaches...

I hope that's not supposed to be a photo of a Midland Mainline 170, if it is then my traction instructor was worse than I ever gave him credit for ......

:D

Are you kidding???
It's clearly a 6 car set.
They were quite common at the time on test runs up the ECML.

Hi there,
Somewhere on the web is a photo of a 7 car 170.
In fact, I'm sure I saw it linked to from a post on the Forum some time ago...

I recall that it was undergoing was undergoing some test rather than operating in service but it seemed that this was quite possible.

Cheers,
Jason

I seem to recall that the additional intermediate carriages for the Chiltern 168s were delivered in this way - By forming up a 6 or 7-car class 168 formation.
