I covered most of the network last year, and it was largely problem free, with very friendly and helpful staff. At that time, some of the old units were still in use and they were rather down at heel. The new ‘blue trains’ have good visibility and security guards patrolling. Seating is longitudinal and not the most comfortable.
My particular highlight was the line to Simonstown (change at Fishhoek). The coastal views are stunning. It’s a half hour stroll from the station to the penguin beach. If you get bored of units, the 1730 ex Cape Town is loco hauled stock, bound for Malmesbury. You can disembark at Bellville and get a train back to downtown Cape Town.
If you have the opportunity, check out Ceres Rail excursions to Elgin market - steam hauled, varied scenery (using an otherwise freight-only route through the docks, cracking view of Table Mountain and then a formidable climb through the mountains). The observation saloon at the back of the consist is superb value, with its own bar. Drinks and snacks (and ‘liquid steam’) are also available from a traditional buffet car.
