When trying to quote this post (#366 in the Trespass incident at Manchester Piccadilly (11/03) thread) I get an error saying that I must enter a message with more than 5 characters, despite having written a couple of paragraphs in response which posted fine when I removed the quote.

Just tested that for you on the other thread and it seems to work OK for me.

Did you try to quote the post in question directly or by using the "reply" function?

I selected it using the "+Quote" link and then the "Insert quotes" when composing my reply. I also copied my reply (including the quote) to a text file, hard refreshed the page and pasted it back in as a new reply. Both gave the same result.

This happens when you haven’t closed the quote properly. Make sure it’s closed, then try again. If you don’t close the quote the forum doesn’t recognise you’ve typed anything.

To paraphrase: The forum insists that you type at least five characters to avoid empty posts. Quoted text doesn't count toward this total, so if your reply is accidentally inside the [quote] tags (or there's a quote tag that never gets [/closed]) the forum's filter will say you haven't typed enough.
