Your problem here is that with lenses cheap is not as good quality. The one not to buy is the Sigma with the same range. The quality is very suspect at the end of the ranges. I ended up buying a more expensive Pentax lens much better quality.I Have a Canon 300 zoom lens the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 II - but it very slow in focusing.
Does anyone have an alternative "cheap" lens with similar range which they regularly use with a Canon 450 D SLR (or similar model) which they could recommend?

I'm of the opposite view, I find Sigma lenses are better than the Pentax equivalents. I use this lense (Pentax mount though), and it takes some stunning pictures all through the range.
