I've got a holiday booked at the end of the month. I've decided not to go now for health reasons. I can get a refund on my accomodation but where do I stand with my flights?

Outbound is Easyjet and return is with Jet2. Will I completely lose my money?

You will probably loose your money (but see Easyjet conditions).

You should be able to rearrange the flights for a new date for a fee (which may be more than you payed for flight) plus any fare difference.

Your holiday insurance should cover you if your doctor advises you not to fly; but probably won't cover you if it is only your decision. Check your policy for the exact wording.

3. Cancelling your easyJet flight

If you cancel within 24 hours of booking, we will give you a full refund minus the Cancellation Fee (as listed in Fees and Charges).

If you cancel more than 24 hours after booking, we will not refund any of your fare. You may prefer to change your flight instead (see ‘Making changes to your booking’ above).

If you need to cancel:

  • due to a serious or terminal illness: you are required to complete and submit a Medical Declaration document. Please visit our 'Managing Your Booking' area for more details and conditions. Our team will review your case and if your circumstances qualify we may, in our discretion, offer you a refund or flight voucher towards the value of a subsequent flight, to be used within six months;
  • due to a family bereavement: please contact our Customer Services Team as soon as you can. Our team will review your case and if your circumstances qualify we may, in our discretion, offer you a refund, fee waiver to change your flight or flight voucher towards the value of a subsequent flight, to be used within six months.
You may be asked to provide proof of these special circumstances.

If you cancel, miss or do not take a flight, this does not affect the other flights on your booking. You can claim a full refund of Government Tax (as listed in Fees and Charges) for the flight(s) you did not take. You can do this by contacting our Customer Services Team.

Can I change the date on my booking?

Even though bookings are non-refundable and non-transferable, we can help you with date changes. For date changes, we'll charge the administration fee plus the difference (if any) in price between your original fare and today’s fare price (including any increase to taxes, fees, or other charges). If the overall fare has decreased since you made the original booking, no refund will be paid. Please also note that any discounts you had on the original fare will no longer apply and you’ll need to pay the extra cost if you make a change. You can make date changes by visiting Manage My Booking, contacting our Customer Service team, or by going to one of our airport sales desks.

I thought it might be awkward having inward and outward flights with different companies. I have travel insurance with my bank account although I've not "told them" about my upcoming holiday. Someone has said that I'd be able to reclaim the fees with that. It's worth a try I guess.

Depends how expensive the flights are and what your excess is.

I'd contact easyJet and Jet2.

easyJet have this in their TnCs: https://www.easyjet.com/en/terms-and-conditions/key-terms

I don't know what they consider serious illness, but it is worth a try.

Either way I hope you are not too unwell and are able to make the trip sometime.

A lot will depend on the grade of tickets you purchased, the cheapest are less flexible.

If you are choosing not to go, then it might be that travel insurance does not cover it either. Again the cheaper the policy, the wider the exclusions that it is likely to have.
