Cancelling a cycle reservation

I often travel around Britain by a combination of train and bicycle, so I usually book myself a cycle reservation at the same time as I book myself cheap advance fares. Sometimes, after booking, I decide not to bring the bike, for example this week, after booking a trip from London to Cumbria I decided to spend a few days walking instead of cycling and left the bike at home. I know some companies are more concerned than others, but for this trip, largely with Virgin (who always seem to ask if I have a bike reservation when boarding) should I have let them know that I didn't need the reservation, and if so, how? I know 99 times out of 100 it probably doesn't matter, but I hate the thought that I might have deprived someone who really needed to travel, with their bike, of a reservation, thus forcing them to change their plans and / or pay more.

You can go to your nearest staffed station (provided you got a reference for the booking in the first place, like "JK123456"), or contact the TOC concerned who are usually able to help.

If you have the reservation coupon, take it to any staffed station where it can be cancelled in a matter of seconds

Indeed. People cancel seat and bike reservations so rarely it's a breath of fresh air when someone tries!
