Cancellation code RB used today on a service that had earlier affected us as a family. While being supportive of transparency in root causes for unexpected events - why is higher than expected passenger numbers (my wording) a reason to cancel a train?

I would have expected platform access restrictions to be used to reduce footfall and prevent such occurrences, similar to London Underground routinely closing the passenger access at street level when Victoria tube platforms were "full, to body contact levels".

Message on RTT was "This service was cancelled between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport due to an unexpected number of passengers joining/alighting the service (RB)."

Someone will know for certain, but I'd guess it's either because it's too full and no one will get off, or the station everyone is aiming for is at capacity on the platforms already.

I started reading through this thread but it's chocked full of tangents

I'm guessing the service may have been this one, operated by Transport for Wales?

https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L39812/2024-09-26/detailed

Looks like it lost 20 mins at Rhyl for some reason, and then seems it would've only had a 10 minute turnaround at Manchester Airport, so would've returned late.

Female passenger stuck in toilet by a door release fault that Guard apparently unable to release for ages.

On arrival at next station Prestatyn, no carriage doors would open and SOS button failed to open doors either, train continued to Flint where passengers eventually got off.

They all then had a half hour wait for next train back along the coast.

Dunno why they've coded that to RB, the unreliable CAF toilets are hardly the passenger's fault. Expect it'll be coded now it's day 2.

What the code is doesn't really matter though, it was cancelled short due to it being late.

Sounds like a serious safety issue.

What happens in the event of fire or evacuation when passengers are trapped by 'unreliable CAF toilets' and can't get out?

Don't take RTT's cancellation codes as gospel, they are often misattributed from what was actually published.

In the Delay Attribution Wiki it lists RB as "Passengers joining/alighting", I don't think there's a code for "person got trapped in the toliet", maybe M7 "Door and Door system faults", since it was indeed a door that failed (just not an external one).
Looks like RTT got it pretty right compared to the code.

A general M8 cancellation may fit better, Also my fave cancellation code on RTT as it actually forms a coherent sentence "A problem with the train M8"

Not an ill passenger having VD?

Personally I'd have coded it M7, a door's a door on a passenger train, internal or external, even a gangway door's M7s

It's entirely possible for a train to have multiple delays attributed to different codes, so it would appear that in this case the cancellation has been attributed to code RB but that doesn't mean other problems haven't been given the correct codes. As stated, level 2 attribution will probably have resulted in changes.
