Canary Wharf Oyster validators

(I'm aware that this perhaps should be in the Light Rail forums, but I thought more people might know the answer here )

Hey!

Just a quick query really - what's the time delay on the standalone validators at Canary Wharf DLR? (The time between 'touching out' and recognising a subsequent touch as a 'touch in') - only reason I ask is when in the area, I regularly hop off, nip into the adjacent Tesco Metro, than attempt to touch in again and it still says 'Exit' on the screen (presumably also resetting the countdown so I have to wait even longer before boarding the DLR as presumably I don't have a valid journey entry recorded on my Oyster!)

20 minutes if one touch is on the DLR and the other is on LU; 10 minutes otherwise.

That is interesting. It sounds like you're experiencing a continuation exit. The trouble is that this was supposed to have been removed from the Canary Wharf DLR readers as confirmed in a FOI response to someone whose daughter had suffered a penalty fare. Indeed it wasn't listed on the response I received to a FOI request back in March. Please can you confirm that this is definitely still happening and I will follow it up.

As to the time limit, if it is indeed a continuation exit, it will vary. It is defined as the maximum journey time from the origin of the current journey to the station with continuation exit set. Likely to be at least an hour. The best workaround I can suggest is to use Heron Quays for either arrival or departure.

Also, if it has repeated the exit then don't panic. Ask the RPI to examine your journey history and they will see two identical journeys ending at Canary Wharf within a few minutes (i.e. mutually impossible). Your next touch out will create a third journey and you will only be charged for this third overall journey. If the RPI insists on issuing a penalty fare then do not pay it at the time and submit an appeal. I will assist with this if necessary.

Will check it again next time I'm passing through (likely to be Friday of this week)

Not touching in either direction will be problematic if you are doubling back, and you risk creating a H2H journey (costing you two maximum fares) or exceeding the maximum journey time.

If it is one journey which you are breaking for 5-10 minutes then that would work. You wouldn't have a problem being in a CTA as you would be 'in' the system. Where you might have problems is if stopped by RPIs having exited the station without touching out. As island says, if Canary Wharf is your destination then you will probably have problems whatever you do. This is why Canary Wharf should not have continuation exit set. I will make some further enquiries.

I've noticed that the "Red Line" near the Tesco has the oyster reader inside the CTA.

There is a sign...something about you must not cross the line without a valid ticket.
The Oyster reader is beyond the red line though.
