Canary Wharf Crossrail Station

It seems from the evidence given to the Public Accounts Committee yesterday that one expense that was incurred by crossrail was the replacement of station equipment that was installed by Canary Wharf Group when they originally built the station.

An article in Building https://www.building.co.uk/news/bil...be-80m-crossrail-boss-reveals/5099509.article has the quote:

“It was completed in 2015 but we still haven’t finished the work at Canary Wharf and we won’t finish Canary Wharf until September or October this year.

“It’s fair to say the quality of the work we’ve found in Canary Wharf, completed by Canary Wharf Group, before my time actually, has had to have a wholesale retrofit, particularly in the safety systems.”

Anyone know what he is refering to? Are we talking about fire protection, lighting or some other equipment?

I’ve heard on the rumour mill one of the biggest expenses related to the escalators, which allegedly weren’t suitable for a mass-transit system.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like Canary Wharf were given far too much freedom in defining the technical specifications of the build, which generally fell below those expected of a mass-transit system.

With the increasing push towards third-party investment in the network, this’ll be an important lesson in client control of the scope of works delivered & funded by an external party.

It does make me wonder if the whole idea of commercial companies building railway infrastructure can be made to work. The whole idea that it would be cheaper may be in doubt if the cheaper components are not suitable for a mass-transit system.
