Can someone explain why TFL charged me so much

Sorry if this in the wrong place, but i woke up this morning to a rather large charge of £27.60 after using TFL PAYG. I had some time to kill yesterday so i decided to go around doing some trainspotting, and a quick Google implies the max daily cap was £12.80. Can i dispute this at all or should I have just brought a travel card.
Please see attached screenshot for more details on the journey. Any help is appreciated :)

Link your physical card to your TfL account, it will automatically add the Google Pay virtual card, so that you can see your travel history in detail

The wallet view isn't really helpful to check if you got a maximum journey time hit or missing tap

Without the journey history from the TfL website we are guessing slightly. But I think the issue you have is that you exceeded the maximum journey time several times and thus incurred multiple maximum fares.

PAYG is not really suitable for 'bashing' because of the maximum journey times, a paper Travelcard is much better for that.

Yeah that's probably it. I guess you live and you learn. I'm not from London so i just assumed there was a daily cap and tapped in and out where ever I went. Though only between Cutty Sark and Euston is where i exceeded the maximum time i believe (i went up to South Kenton and back aha)

Log into the TfL website and register the card, you might be able to add the end point of some journeys or query them.

Without the full journey history from TfL I'm guessing. But judging by the touch times on that list, I would say that you have exceeded the maximum journey time at least once, if not more.

For example, the maximum journey time for a zone one journey is either 90 or 100 minutes Monday to Saturday, or 110 minutes on a Sunday. On your screenshot, the time difference between the touches at Waterloo and Victoria looks to be 109 minutes. https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/refunds/keep-within-maximum-journey-times

Journey madeMonday to Friday 04:30 - 19:00Monday to Friday after 19:00 & all day SaturdaySunday and public holidays
In Zone 1 only
In Zone 2 only
In Zones 2-3
1 hour 30 minutes1 hour 40 minutes1 hour 50 minutes

Set up an account with TfL and register the actual card which sits behind your Google Pay. This should tell you what you need to know and you can then contact TfL to ask them for a refund. If you explain what you did they're normally pretty good.

It's worth remembering, too, that journeys can be linked together through what's called an 'out of station interchange' (OSI). This means you can touch out at one station and touch in at the next and the system will link the two journeys together.

For this reason, if you're doing track bashing and spending a lot of time inside the system, you are always better off with a paper ticket.

There is a daily cap, but only journeys that are completed within the maximum journey time will count towards this. Incomplete journeys do not count towards the cap.

If you really want to use PAYG then you are best off touching out and back in whenever you reach the furthest-out point you are travelling to on any given line, i.e. South Kenton in your example. Maximum journey times are longer the more zones you travel through, so you can be more confident of not exceeding the MJT if you touch out and back in at a station in outer zones.

If you are expecting to hit the cap, and hold a 16-25 railcard, a day TC (or Oyster with the discount loaded) after 0930 will be discounted (before 0930, you may get minimum-fared depending on the day) which contactless isn’t

You can load a day Travelcard on most NR smartcards if you don’t want to deal with paper

Personally I would ring TfL and explain you didn’t realise and that you were spotting. You will need to register the card before ringing them. I know people who have done this in the past and TfL have corrected it to the normal cap on the first time, but obviously this is not a guarantee they will do this.

There's no point in doing that without accessing the journey history first, because you need to know what incomplete journey you are 'completing'.

There is a daily cap, but the maximum charge for that journey to South Kenton isn’t contributing to the cap. So you’ll possibly have been charged an amount (possibly less than daily cap) plus (a single maximum fare).

Well yes, but that advice has been given numerous times, and is part of registering the card. I was aiming to reply to those stating you should try correct a few of the journeys manually.
