So in 2014 I failed at the 1st stage of psychometric tests at the assessment centre, in 2015 I passed all the assessment stages and amazingly I was offered a position as a trainee. Unfortunately, after a telephone discussion with the recruitment department it had emerged that there was a discrepancy on my application form and as a result the job offered was removed. Without going into all the specifics I didn't realise Scots Law was different to the rest of the UK and I omitted (quite a minor) charge from my application form on the understanding that it was not relevant. I did research the charge when I was submitting my application but the websites I checked out didn't clearly differentiate that spent/unspent convictions are longer in different parts of the UK so to the best of my knowledge I submitted my application honestly, maybe looking back now I was a little naive and I should have checked, double checked & triple checked that this charge I had was "spent." Maybe on the application form it could have been stated a bit more clearly? it also seems pretty unfair that if two people were charged for the same thing on the same day and one stayed in London whereas the other lived in Glasgow then one charge is spent after 1 year whilst the other is after 5 years.
I do fully take 100% ownership of what happened and I'm not posting this to look for sympathy, nor am I spitting the dummy in any way. At the time I did appeal against the TOC's decision to remove the job offer, I fully explained everything that had happened and how it happened, I gave them website addresses that I had checked out, I even went into specifics regarding the charge itself but they still upheld their original decision. I was a little disappointed with the letter they sent me back as they highlighted words like "confidence" and "trust" and say that I had ample opportunities at the assessment centre to discuss background checks - I went through the whole application process and gave nothing but dedication, honesty and integrity so it kind of felt like they were not believing what I was saying.
So looking forward, can anyone offer any advice if I should re-apply again when they next advertise? All the way through the application process they couldn't have been any more helpful and nice but whenever this discrepancy emerged they quickly changed their tune, I think they were really p!ssed at what happened and thats why I maybe think that any future application will not be considered but who knows? Luckily I work in a job that I enjoy but I still would like very much to move into the railway industry as I still feel I have a lot to offer.
