Thank you. Was there ever a connection from platforms 15 or 16 to the others ?

Yes, one could once walk up the stairs on 13/14 and turn left and left again and carry on down to the H&C line. This was fantastic so long as the station was quiet and you were energetic and able-bodied. The former generally not being the case, the current arrangements are generally better for most people using the station, especially given the changes to LU service pattern and frequency since then.

I remember those days, it was much more convenient to change trains back in those days…

but I was talking about a connection on the rails

When the new LU H&C concourse was going through planning, the existing bridge was going to be extended directly towards the area just outside the H&C gateline, but a subsequent decision converted the space into an LU plant compartment, leaving only the longer walk round we have today.

Yes. Platforms 13/14/15/16 were all for usable by the underground at one time. There’s a diagram i linked to in a recent thread somewhere, here you go:

I expect that the 1951 layout was in use until the 1967 changes @Taunton mentions in the next post.

Yes, 13 to 16 were two islands, known in timetables as Paddington Suburban, and shared with the H&C trains. All four were electrified, and also used by the Western trains shown in timetables as the Suburban station. Generally the H&C Underground trains used the outer lines, and the suburbans the inner lines, but occasionally the opposite. The Western trains crossed over to share the Underground lines at Royal Oak. This was finally eliminated, and the H&C segregated as nowadays, in the big reorganisation of 1967.

Because the Underground had 4th rail electrification this conflicted with the GWR AWS (ATC) system, which had a contact shoe under the loco, and also on the Pressed Steel suburban diesels used from 1960. There was an ingenious 'clip up' arrangement at Royal Oak for this devised for the onetime 61xx suburban tank locos, the condensing pannier tanks which operated right through these platforms along the Circle Line to the GWR goods depot at Farringdon, and later those 1960 diesel sets. Any diesel units running there which did not have the ATC adaptation had stencilled boldly in the cab above the driver "This car must not enter Paddington Suburban".

Paddington (suburban) was done using funds from Government (Loan guarantees and grants) Act 1929, work started in May 1930 and was completed in 1933. As built 13-16 were two islands 600 feet (183m) long

Electric trains were occasionally run through platforms 14 and 15 to keep conductor rails clean, as the steam locos had bit of a corrosive effect.

Alan A Jackson's book on London termini says 14 and 15 lost their junctions at London end on 20th August 1966

The approach tracks were reorganised from September 1967, and from 12 November 1967, Hammersmith and City trains used 15 instead of 13 and 16. Connections between the H&C tracks and GWR suburban tracks were removed.

Although 13 and 14 were built as 183m long, not sure what the official length is nowadays.

13 is now non-existent (12 was extended using the track bed of 13)

14’s official length these days is 171m
