Camp Site Question

Apologies if in the wrong section...

Can anyone recommend a camp site (tent) that has excellent views of a busy(ish) railway? Anywhere in the UK would be acceptable.

Forget its name, but the campsite in horton-in-ribblesdale might do you. If settle to carlisle is busy enough for you! Northumberland might well have some for ecml.

If you are in the Scouts there is the Scouting Association's private camp site at Blackwell Court. Spent 10 days there once during my Scouting years and in those days it was all Peaks and 37s...

There's a campsite near Harmans Cross station on the Swanage Railway from memory.

Do not touch Horton in Ribblesdale unless you have to! The camp-site owner is an old guy who plays music until 2am, both pubs are complete rip offs and when I went some goon decided to continuously wake us up until 3am.

The Ashurst site can get waterlogged when it rains! I have stayed at White Rose camp at Appleby which backs on to the Settle-Carlisle.

I've been trying to resist this cheap gag, but if Rugby has wi-fi nearby you could sit there all day looking at Julian Clarey and Graham Norton fanpages. For variaton add in some vintage Strike it Lucky/Rich or watch Glee on 4 on demand!

There's one at Bamford and another a couple of miles away towards Edale that back onto the Hope Valley route.

I was going to mention the latter one. We stayed there in the 'seventies and one morning everyone was talking hearing a train smash on the line during the night. There was an earth bank, presumably to screen off normal railway noise. When I climbed up it and looked over, there was a tamper resting quietly in the loop.

Expect your kids to get very dirty. The soil is very black with shale.

Quite ironic that some travellers now want to stay in the same place, and have the local council pay for hard standings and utilities, when most do not pay any sort of tax at all.

Used to live the other side of that camp site . It's a very good one and you can walk all the way down to Brockenhurst by the side of the line. There are plenty of facilities in Ashurst , the forest is stunning . Look out for the giant ants too . (wood ants about three times the size of normal ones that build huge nest , sometimes the size of small cars) .

( there have been a few fatal accidents there in the past. Campers used the line as a short cut . Often in the middle of the night and often the worse for drink , usually people from up north who knew nothing of third rail danger . )
