Maybe a bit off the intended course of this thread, but:
Back in the late 70's I was a Student Apprentice at Herbert Morris Ltd, the sadly long gone crane maker at Loughborough.
Part of the training was with the Installation Team (referered to as The Erection Section), and for me in 1978 that was on the later stages of work on two of the four 130 Tonne cranes in the big shed at Cammel Lairds, there are two cranes in each of the bays in there.
The cranes travel on gantries, which I remember being told was 114' above floor level. There were lifts to that level and the first time you stepped out to walk along the gantry to the cranes it was a real eye opener. I can truthfully tell people that I've bumped my head on the ceiling up there.
I won't say you really get used to working at such a height as that could become complacent, and I'm happy not to have had to do that for a living since. But one thing that did stick in my mind was one day seeing a seagull fly towards me and then dive beneath me and come up on the other side. That just didn't seem right!
