Another attempt to solve the Camden Town capacity problems (a pre-requisite for the eventual splitting of the Northern Line into two separate routes):

We are proposing to substantially upgrade the capacity of Camden Town station, and would like to hear your views.

More and more people have been using the station, with a 60% increase over the past 10 years. At peak times there is congestion for people entering and leaving, and for those changing trains. We regularly have to send customers down spiral stairs, make the station exit only, or hold people outside the ticket gates. If we do nothing these measures will become more frequent. The station needs improving so that it can properly support the vibrant local community and economy.
[...]
A possible site for a new station entrance would be on Buck Street, between Camden High Street and Kentish Town Road. It would lead to three new escalators and two lifts. Below ground there would be more space to change between trains. This would in turn enable future capacity benefits on the Northern line.

It certainly sounds less controversial than the last scheme, which was considered too destructive for the local area.

The existing station is a nightmare, even without any future plans for splitting the Northern Line, it needs upgrading.

Note no mention of spitting the lines. This is not a done deal, despite many at TfL wishing it were so. The eventual decision will be a political one, not an operational one, although it will, of course, have to be operable.

Whilst the work is required to split the lines, the upgrade of the station is really needed regardless, so makes sense to divorce the station upgrade and line split.

Note no mention of spitting the lines.

I wouldn't expect it to be - the last thing they want is a wider debate over splitting the Northern Line impacting support for this scheme, which is necessary anyway given how crowded the station is. Realistically though separation of the two branches is all but inevitable, with the wider benefits outweighing any local concerns.

I think this is very much implied in the consultation, they do say this after all:

"The Camden Town Station Capacity Upgrade would enable future capacity benefits on the Northern line"

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

I followed that link above to the London Connections article, and its following comments/discussion, and towards the end of the comments it is made clear by someone (following a visit to TfL's 3D model) that at least one of the new passageways is 'double decked', and the new lifts will have two lower landings.

Probably needs to be read fully for the context, and with reference to the drawings of the proposed layout; but it does clarify things slightly...
