I'm thinking of buying a proper camcorder.
Which do you think is better - Mini DV or HDD technology? DVD is out of the question.

Hard Disk Drive which is in-built into the camcorder. Offers high definition quality and easy to transfer vids onto a computer, but if the camcorder is lost or damaged, its game over.
How easy is it to transfer your videos onto a PC, and roughly how much is a decent bit of kit to make the conversion?

I have a mini DV camcorder and its brilliant (altough I don't how I can get any of my recording on a PC, got no lead with it or anything).
With my MiniDV cam I just plug in my firewire cable and use Pinnacle Studio to capture of the tape.
I would prefer tape as you can store more video as once your cam hard drive is full you would have to delete stuff whilst with tapes you can just put a new one in

That sounds simple enough. But my computer doesn't have firewire. Can it be done via USB do you know?

Do you think he would really base his purchase on 5 words from a 13 year old with no evidence to back up the theory stated... "so and so is better".

Well it is. It would last longer because memory is built in. You wouldn't have to keep messening about with tapes. It would be like a camera , plug in load on , then your done.

On topic-Well tapes are ok , but HDD might last longer.
HDD can last longer than mini Dv but the quality is lower.

HDD Is better if you want good quality images and easy PC Transfer.
Although I have a MiniDV I'm thinking in investing in a DVD Or Hardrive. The bloke in Currys said there both the same but one is portable and one isn't if you get what I mean.
Also when buying a Camcorder check the Optical Zoom not the digital (As it loses quality)
Look at the qauality checks.

From my experiences DON'T get a DVD camcorder, unless you have a converter of some sort and then the quality goes down.

Cheers for the opinions all. I think I will go for a Mini DV camcorder, because HDD doesn't seem to have any advantages in terms of transfers or quailty, is not very established and overpriced. Is it possible to remotely control the zoom on a Mini DV with some sort of handpiece?
Can anyone recommend a decent brand? I'm looking for qualites such as minimal focus hunting, clarity, performance in the dark and especially crisp sound recording.

Sony is definitely the brand to go for.
I assume you'd want to transfer most of your videos to your PC, the ease of use of HDD makes is perfect for this. However, mini-DV is better quality and without too much hallse can also be put on a PC. Once you've got it set up and become accustomed to it you'll be fine.
