Cambridge to aviemore

I am rubbish with finding good deals and can't say I am an expert at east coasts mixing desk thing.
So I am looking to get from CBG to AVM on the 09/08/13 returning on the 12/08/13
I would like to leave early on the 09/08 and depart around midday on the return.

I would love to travel it first class so if anyone is kind enough to help I will thank you in advance

It's generally cheaper not to "split" so just type in CBG to AVM and enter your dates & times.

It might be cheaper to split, for example at places like Peterborough/Edinburgh/Stirling/Perth.

How about:

Cambridge - Perth depart 0900 (£90.65 1st)
Perth - Aviemore depart 1617 (£31.40 1st)

Aviemore - Edinburgh depart 1026 (£11.30 Std / £56.70 1st) or depart 1123 (£21.20 / £56.70)
Edinburgh - Cambridge (via: Stevenage) depart 1630 (£68 1st)

I'd consider going standard on Aviemore - Edinburgh, and have a break in Edinburgh, you save a lot of money doing that and you get the chance to break your journey. That would keep the total down to about £200.

Sorry should have said the only bit I am fussed about being 1st is the longest bit not bothered either way about a stop in edb so if its cheaper I will do that cheers

You have to book each ticket separately, adding them to your basket one at a time. You should end up with 4 "journeys" in your basket.

Then checkout and pay

You can buy these tickets from any rail ticket website, as they can all sell nearly all tickets that are valid on each other's services however East Coast's site will give you a small discount on tickets on East Coast Advance tickets.

Websites operated by the Train Operating Companies themselves have no booking fees, unlike many third party vendors.

Ah. It appears that at least the first ticket that yorkie quoted is £90.65 Standard class, not First. Oops

Hmm, not sure what happened there, but you can in fact get 1st class for £99.45, but you have to avoid XC. To do this I specified via: Stevenage, then clicked "Timetables only" and in the 'calling at' field typed: NNG, then clicked "Buy a ticket" and the cheap 1st class fare shows up!

A station could probably do it easier, though you'd not get the online discount.

Why on earth is there no option to specify to avoid a particular TOC?:roll:

The problem here is that EC trains to Edinburgh generally don't call at many stations, so you need to change trains. Not a problem apart from the booking engines try to minimise journey time by putting you on XC services, and even if it's just Cambridge-Peterborough & Doncaster-York, that can stop a £99ish fare appearing and bump up the price to £200+

The reservable Scotrail trains can also cause problems as well. The rail industry is doing its best to put people onto the airlines in this case.

for those of us in East Anglia that travel north of Edinburgh removing the Highland Chieftain's Peterborough stop was a big loss. I now, from Cambridge, often a book a ticket from London and a separate Cambridge-London ticket. Can work out as quick and even as cheap.

For 2 people, I hope. The flexible Super Off-Peak Return Cambridge - Aviemore route Not Via London costs £146.80 for an adult, so that would be £293.60 for two adults. I can't find an Cambridge - Aviemore ticket for one person costing £293.

The detailed time restrictions are here. Briefly, your ticket is valid at any time on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank holidays. On other days:

• if you choose to travel via Ely, it is valid by any train except those scheduled to depart between 03:00 and 09:29.
• if you choose to travel via Stevenage, it is valid by any train between Cambridge and Stevenage; by any train to the north from Stevenage scheduled to depart before 03:00, between 09:19 and 15:07 (inclusive) and at or after 19:01 (Mon-Thu), 18:35 (Fri); and by any train from the north to Stevenage scheduled to arrive before before 04:30, and at or after 10:55.

Probably explains why the cheaper fares were not showing for him. Supplying basic piece of information like how many people travelling can make all the difference.

If you simply asked for return tickets from Cambridge to Aviemore then yes, that is the best they would have been able to do.

You would have to ask for the 4 individual single tickets, as described above, to get that deal.
