Looking for the cheapest day return on Sat 4th Feb, with YP Railcard from Cambridge to Penkridge. So far, going via London and getting Advance singles to and from Euston seems cheapest (£10.55 Cambridge London return plus two £3.95 singles to and from Stafford plus a Stafford-Penkridge return £4.50 = £22.95), but I'd rather go CrossCountry to Nuneaton and then London Midland if possible because it's quicker.

I honestly dont think you will beat that. I did Ely to Birmingham just before Christmas and it was £33.90 as far as Leicester (so with YP this would cost about £22 and you will only be half way there).

Hard to beat but you can get close.

Cambridge to Peterborough CDR VIA ELY £10.50
There's plenty of CrossCountry advances (so you can stay on the same train from Cambridge) available all day at £5.30 each way between Peterborough and Nuneaton.
Then Nuneaton to Penkridge CDR NOT VIA BIRMNGHM £4.05

Total £25.15.

If you can leave Cambridge around 7am and get back after 9pm you can get advances to Peterborough at £4.30 in each direction, getting the total down to £23.25 so there's only 30p in it.

Actually if you can leave Cambridge even earlier at 0555 and get back even later at 2310 there are advances as far as Nuneaton for only £7.25 each way, which would make the total cost only £18.55.

Stafford-Penkridge return £4.50

That's the wrong price - an Anytime Day Return Stafford to Penkridge with Y-P discount is only £2.25.
