Certainly don't think you'd fit a diverted GC HST or Hull/GC 180 in there anymore- though P6 is unaffected. Not sure how long a set they could take before- could they fit an 8 car 317 or 365? Matters little, in normal service it's mainly 2 and 3 car car 170s, with one or two four-car 317 services- all of which should still comfortably fit.

Cheers for the info

In future whenever there is a need to terminate a GC/HT 180 from the north there'll still be platform 4 and the two 12 car platform faces on the new island (7&8?) to use as well (assuming they'll be bidirectional as is usually the case nowadays) so there'll be much more flexibility anyway...

There's been impressive progress- the platform structure is currently being filled in; the tracks have been lifted and fully replaced. Piling is underway for the bridge- platform 6 is currently inaccessible to passengers

Is this the last station with the old "one platform fits all" design? I don't mean on single track lines but where trains from each direction use different parts of the same single platform. I know a number of Brunel's stations looked like this.

There's a different version at Penryn.

As I understand it, there has previously (long ago) been an island platform at Cambridge, but it didn't last long..

Platform 3 at Chester has a similar setup to Penryn, with pointwork connecting with a through road. It dates from the opening of the station, when it was the only through platform available.

It's a bit more advanced than that- the track has been fully relaid, and the brick facing is almost complete. The backfill of the structure was in the process of being compacted today

There is the new loop at Dovey Junction which will allow services to/from Aberystwyth to pass each other using different parts of the same platform (the other platform face is for the coast line) though not used under the current timetable (it will be needed if the hourly service starts)

Slightly different - Dunbar has one platform in a loop for both directions.

I was in Cambridge on Saturday. You can see the island platform - just need to be able to get to it now!
It is good that it was announced that a larger ticket hall will be provided. there were so many people queuing for tickets that I had to almost fight my way from the ticket barriers to get out of the station!
Could do with a separate exit only gateline which bypasses the main ticket hall.

I see the proposed Chesterton station is back in the news.
I believe though this will just cause a bottle neck for XC.
Would be good if the platforms will be added with extra track and leave the main to the fast traffic....

Progress- the bridge is in

What's being changed with regards the track and OHL layout? The lines through the platforms are fully connected both ends and have OHL already, though with low speeds in and out?

AFAIK the old Down Goods has been removed and placed slightly west of the old formation - which the new platform sits on top of. The Up Goods has been upgraded.

I was there on saturday and it looked like Ainscough were craning some huge bridge into place. I can see how those platforms will help the running of the station

Time lapse of the bridge being installed from Network Rail's YouTube channel.
This may or may not have been in the links from the local paper, I get a 404 error when I click on them so I cant tell.

Oh, and am I alone in being slightly sad about this new platform? It seems an odd thing to say because the station will clearly be better when the new platform is open, but I loved the crazy layout at Cambridge and making it look the same as pretty much every other station on the network removes some of the magic. :(

The signals were put in at the ends of the platforms at the weekend, and from what I've at the south end a new track layout- there are seperate points leading to each platform from the "Up" line at the south end, whereas before there was a single set of points on the "Up" leading to branching for the various siding roads. Has there been rearrangement at the north end as well?

Are they providing track capacity for parallel moves, eg will a down train be able to enter the new P7 as an up train is leaving from the new P8?

I'd have to check, but I can't remember seeing a connection to the "down" lines between the two sets of points

Something I don't get- why doesn't the canopy run the full length of the platform? Surely it isn't that much of a saving to stop short?

The same reason canopies don't cover the entire platform length at other stations.

Planning documentation describes 124 m of canopy (so about half the 250 m ?? length) running west from the footbridge, which will have covered stairs. There are various open fronted seating areas, an information kiosk and staff office, and passive provision for a retail kiosk. Nothing mentioned about toilets, which doesn't surprise me as presumably there will be adequate facilities in the existing station buildings?
