Hi I am looking to go on a wee trip some time in feb I would like to go via the east coast on the way to Glasgow and use the west coast on the way back down I would like to use 1st class both ways I am able to stay in Glasgow for the night or I can travel back down the same day if this is possible I have check ec's website and virgins website but am unsure if these will give me the best deals.
So just to sum up I want to travel to Glasgow 1st class
Outward east coast mainline
Return west coast mainline
For the cheapest fair
Any time in feb
Cheers in advance for any help

The cheapest way to do that journey will probably be to purchase advance tickets when they're released. You can check here to see the booking horizons. As you can see both EC and VT are booking as far as the middle of February. I would suggest buying the tickets from East Coast and Virgin's websites as there are no booking fees and the East Coast website will normally give an extra discount on advance tickets (up to an extra 11% off the price) for travel on their trains. Otherwise it's up to you really to work out what trains suit you best and that can be done using any journey planning website. I think you'll need to split it into chunks however, so Cambridge - Glasgow as one chunk, Glasgow - Euston the next and Kings Cross - Cambridge (perhaps via Peterborough if you want EC on that last leg) being the last.

Agreed.
Glasgow - Euston the next and Kings Cross - Cambridge ... being the last.
I think Advance singles Glasgow - Cambridge route + VWC & Connections are likely to have lower prices. Search for "Glasgow - Cambridge via Euston". At present East Coast offers fares for February 2013 from £24.50 but this price is likely to rise next week when 2013 prices are loaded onto the booking engines.

Interesting. I didn't think there'd be such a fare. In that case I agree with the above suggestion of looking for Glasgow - Cambridge via Euston tickets.

Is that 1st class as the OP wanted? If so I am impressed as I saw nothing less than about £53 when I had a quick look and that was just for the Kings Cross Glasgow leg on the 0900 (which would have enabled the OP to comfortably get and down in the day as they wanted).
I clearly need to hone my skills and have more patience

The £24.50 is the lowest tier of Standard Advance. The lowest tier of First Advance Route +VWC & Connectns is £65.50.
