As interested as I am in the Cambrian line and it's various ups and downs, might it be a better idea to have just one Cambrian/Wrexham/Wales Assembly rail thread you can update? Many are quite similar...

Agree, that way people who want to know about it know exactly where to go, and the forum list isn't cluttered with random links to the NWRail site.

I've suggested the same before about one "Pacer" thread, one "Voyager" thread etc, because we tend to end up discussing the same things over and over...

...it worked fine for Grand Central (think that thread was about a hundred pages long)

a good read, with a PDF entitled
Minimising the impact on the train service when resignalling an existing route with ERTMS, using its existing rolling stock

by Peter Leppard
Operations & Safety Director
Arriva Trains Wales

But isn't this the same Peter Leppard with decades of railway experience most were deriding because he took a pop at the drivers of milkfloats ?? Make your mind up.

Love the last bit.....
We should have kept what we had!!!

Couldn't agree more. Maintenance of this railway is fast becoming a nightmare!

If the presentation is correct it is descriptive, apparently precise and provides guidance on lessons learned. He accepts they were a test case.

If I was Arriva I would be sending a significant bill to whoever thought this particular exercise was ready for a de-bugged roll-out.

Also a very worrying fact in that article is there have been five Cat. A spads in the first five months.

I fear for the safety of the railway system if[or when] ERTMS is introduced nationally.

As theres no date on the presentation is it current or already out of date?
SPADS in first 5 Months? End of March (whole Cambrian live) plus 5 is end of August so in future. October (Harlech to Pwhelli) live Mid Oct 10 plus 5 month is Mid March before whole Cambrian roll out....

Without the crucial missing date info is this a credible statement of where ertms and Cambrian is at now?

You may be interested in this letter from the local SARPA rail users Association to Powys County Council, it was signed by the Chairman

I write on behalf of the Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth Rail Passenger Association.

Regrettably we find the proposed timetables currently on the Powys CC website as being re-tendered unacceptable due to the abject failure to coordinate timetables between the bus and rail services.

We are particularly concerned at two locations, Newtown where a very expensive street works programme is being undertaken to "link" the bus and train stations with a futile delineated walkway as the timetables do not coordinate and at Welshpool where the existence of the railway station has not seemed to register at all.

Newtown

Powys CC seems to have a poor grasp of the concept of integrated transport altogether, multi - modal journeys are facilitated by proximity and co-ordination we can clearly see that the utmost is being done to discourage this with a 5-10 minute walk between bus and rail stations followed up by timetables that ensure missed connections.

X44 Newtown to Brecon and Merthyr - the selected departure times from Newtown at 1005, 1205 in the middle of the day ensure no connections can be made with the 1005 and 1205 train arrivals from Shrewsbury. An hours wait is on offer from the 1405 train arrival until 1505. The 0835 departs 11 minutes before the 0846 arrival form Aberystwyth, the 1005 and 1205 41 minutes before arrivals form Aberystwyth, 1625 & 1825 departures 21 minutes before the train arrives from Aberystwyth.
The arrival times at 0955 ,1155,1355, 1555 and 1755 all present 51 minute waits for trains to Shrewsbury.

X75 Llanidloes to Shrewsbury

The sorry tale continues arrivals in Newtown from Llanidloes for 0845, 1100,1300 & 1500 all miss Shrewsbury bound trains which leave Newtown @ 0846,1046,1246,1446.....
Departures to Llanidloes at 0900, 1100, 1300, 1500 are all 55 minutes after a train arrives, those at 1600 & 1800 5 minutes before the train arrives and 1910 65 minutes after.

Does Powys CC remember the grand promises made when the Mid Wales line closed regarding the replacement bus series allowing people to make onward journeys?

How about north of Newtown and the ever expanding village of Abermule whose residents have tho watch the train whiz through non stop. Arrival times at 1055,1255,1455 see the train to Shrewsbury missed by 9 minutes, the 1555 and 1755 arrivals allow a wait of 51 minutes.

X85 Machynlleth to Newtown.

With departures from Newtown at 1005,1205,1405,1600 & 1805 missing the trains from Shrewsbury whom arrive at 1005,1205,1405,1605 & 1805 its little wonder the village of Carno wants its rail station reopened. Arrivals at 0955.1155,1355,1555 and 1755 give a comfy 51 minute wait but will anyone travel as they cant travel in the opposite direction?

Firstly we ask that buses are routed back to the railway station and that the expensively installed bus lane at the station is actually used.
Secondly we ask that someone actually plans the timetables with reference to the rail service. Its not rocket science all over Europe can be found coordinated timetables even elsewhere in the UK and Wales. What make Powys so special that this basic cannot be done?

Welshpool

Firstly we would like to point out the existence of a railway station there. Whereas in Newtown services are being diverted away from the railway stations pre-existing bus stop, Welshpool is not even allowed a bus stop at its railway station or any signage telling potential passengers where the non coordinated buses depart from. This would at least be a start.

We would like to see the 76,88 and X75 services plus the Montgomery 71 service to stop near the railway station. Are second point above re Newtown serves for Welshpool also.

The pdf was created 12/5/11 so Peter "Milk Float" Leopard only had data from Harlech to Pwhelli toe in water and first 5 weeks of full trial on whole Cambrian which we know first 2 weeks were very poor. Kindly suggest if he did it today it wouldn't be so doom and gloom.

Yep, dont plan an integrated transport journey in Powys the local authority cant grasp it.

End of March 2011 in fact. I'll make that clear.

We have relatives who live in the Welshpool area, who comment to us about the lack of a bus stop at the railway station.

Many areas could learn from the excellant small interchange at Clitheroe (in Lancashire) that is situated immediately outside the railway station, in which Lancashire County Council had much input.

I visited the Kent & East Sussex Railway recently, and, not feeling like driving, left the car at home.

Although I'd checked with Traveline, I was a bit apprehensive about the connections as Tenterden Town is not connected to the mainline system.

I needn't have worried. The Arriva bus connected very smoothly just outside Headcorn station with the x40 service from Charing Cross, and the return journey worked well also.

If Kent and Lancashire Councils can do it, then why can't other councils get their act together?

Journeying round Switzerland many years ago, I was amazed how railways connected with steamers/cablecars/postbuses etc on an hourly cycle. You didn't need a timetable.

Warrington Bank Quay has a sort of shuttle bus that runs in the daytime only on a one-way circular route to the bus station and Warrington Central but other than that you have to find your own way without benefit of signs to the nearest bus stop - which is OK for going westwards - and a good 10-15 mins walk, again badly signed, to bus stops for services going south and east, or to the bus station if you're going north.
Widnes does have bus stops nearby but no real clue as to which one to go to if you want to travel into the town centre over a mile away. Even Liverpool Lime St is rather lacking in information about "what do I do next?" as you arrive in town - though there of course you're already in the city centre.

The Chester station "City rail link", is one I give 100% hands up, every few mins to the town centre free with a rail ticket,Alas "never on Sunday", also most buses stop outside the station.
