Been travelling on the Cambrian this week. Some stations eg Tygwyn and Llanbedr closed altogether (one coach platform too short to allow passengers off except via Conductors door and permit social distancing). The trains still seemed to call at some tiny halts however. Is there a definitive up to date list of halts at which the train won't/cannot stop? Useful to know if hiking/trying to get home from the pub!

A list can be found here:-

Then proceed to the Station closure section

Looks like Abererch, Llanaber, Llanbedr and Tygwyn.

Loking on RTT, look on the detailed view for services from Pwllheli, and the stops that aren’t public calls I.E. not available to get off, will show as unadvertised.

Aha, RTT detailed version explains the "unscheduled" stops, which are indeed unadvertised service stops. I assume these are to prevent the unit from running early. Certainly the running generally has been more leisurely than usual, but correct time generally maintained. I was hoping for some 80 mph running (40/80 speed restriction signs abound) on jointed track near Llanaber....I've never timed anything faster than 60 tho.....

I may be wrong as i dont sign that route but i was always under the impression that the Cambrian was in kmh rather than mph with the black speed limit boards so it would be 80kmh.

The 40/80 lineside signs are in km/h, not mph, and are for degraded running only. The normal permissible speed limits are given to the driver electronically via the screen in the cab.

Not sure of the maximum speed limit on the coast section, but you certainly won't get 128km/h (80mph) along there!

You are correct, boards are black, so 80 km/h. My error! I thought 80mph would be a tad reckless on that line, but a 50mph limit effectively seems far more sensible. Mind you the ride is pretty good, so must be well maintained.

Surely it would be possible keep the times by running a bit slower instead of stopping and starting again.
You are correct, the other night I trundled from Harlech to Dyffryn non stop at about 30 mph.......sorry 50km/h!!

Any idea why km/h being used on speed restriction signs when we still use mph on most lines and assume cab speedos are mph? Or is it the electronuc signalling requires it?

Yes, ERTMS exclusively uses metric units.

The main point from the first thread is that these small halts are closed. This has been going on since April/May 2020 & is still in place now 5th Aug 2021. This is clearly ridiculous & is due to the conductors not being allowed to or refusing to walk through the carriage to open the middle doors!! Surely there must be a way of getting round this. For instance why not move the STOP boards further up the line so that the train stops with the conductors doors on the platform so passengers can get on/off there with the conductor being socially distanced as the passengers board.

I haven't seen the small print from today's announcement, but the removal of specific workplace social distancing rules by the Welsh Government (from Sat 7 August) should mean this practice should not be needed.
But it all depends on how the railway interprets the few remaining rules (which will probably last a long time, like face coverings in shops and on public transport).
TfW will have to do a risk assessment, like other businesses.

I'm currently trying to plan a trip on the Cambrian Line to Criccieth in the week 13th-20th September, but there don't seem to be any trains at all running that week! Very confused.

I can't see that going down well with the local schools that was the main reason the line survived closure in the 70s because buses on detour would take to to long & the volume of travelling pupils was high.

It is in the engineering access statement, whether it has got altered or binned since I do not know. However there is a massive amount of work in it and I doubt it didn't go through a consultation process from TfW to the local area.

Yes this 3 month bridge closure has been planned for a long time & it must have gone through all the stages of consultation. It's a pity TFW could not keep 2 units operating from Barmouth to Pwllheli but A NR friend says the units need to be maintained at Mach which would not be feasible.

Frothy can probably be forgiven for being unaware, given that the Future Engineering Work page on National Rail Enquiries doesn't actually mention the work at all:

Neither does TFWs Improvement Works show anything
Yes, I asked TfW on Twitter and they said that the timetables hadn't been finalised for after 12th September yet. But it would be unfortunate if the one time when I need to be in the area I can't use the train...

They have answered the wrong question. Their Timetables are a different issue to planned Engineering Work.

They did ship some Class 158 carriages by road to / from Barmouth recently - there was a You Tube video about it but I don't think it went to Mach due to poor road access there. Doubtless fuelling at Pwllheli is a challenge too far as well.

The Coast halts concerned (site visit to Llanbedr last month) have short, narrow platforms and I'm not sure conductors and passengers could be kept apart on the platforms - it's not just the doors.
I agree the restriction is excessive (and conductors aren't being too fussy on the coast anyway),

I had one fussy member of staff early July on the Cambrian that being the driver that insisted we use the central doors.

As mentioned in TfW's tweet, things may change... but I've compiled a timetable for the Cambrian lines for the week commencing September 13th. If it is correct, the nice folk of Abererch & Tygwyn, who haven't had a train service in over a year, can look forward to two buses in two hours (albeit somewhat clustered.)
